Experiment: Black Fire

Chapter 3: There's a First Time to Everything

"Are you sure?" Mr. Fanning asked. "She looks a little young, not to mention fragile."

"Fragile," Damiel muttered to himself then spoke up. "No, I think she can handle it."

"I wanted my bodyguard to be a guy," Cecelia put in. "Why can't Damiel be mine?" She looked at Ashlee distastefully.

"Damiel has already been assigned to Riley," Mr. Fanning said sternly. "If you say that she is fit to the job, then I will trust your judgment."

"Thank you, Mr. Fanning," Damiel said formally, inclining his head slightly.

"Thank you, Mr. Fanning," Ashlee repeated in the same fashion, mimicking Damiel's movements exactly.

Cecelia scoffed. "A robot."

"Yay! Ashlee's going to be a bodyguard!" squealed an excited Riley.

"Well, children, Damiel and Ashlee, I've got business to attend to," said Mr. Fanning. "I leave matters in your capable hands, Mr. Jorge." Ashlee assumed that Mr. Jorge was Damiel. She felt a peculiar feeling from Damiel, not fear exactly, but... was it... comfort?

The morning progressed after Ashlee had her breakfast. She was led to a spacious room underground full of exercise equipment.

"You need to stay fit in order to keep your job as a bodyguard," Damiel explained.

"I see."

"You will be going to school tomorrow," he continued.

"I see," Ashlee repeated, hiding her discomfort and uneasiness. She had never gone to "school" before.

She learned all the basics of being a bodyguard. She learned all the names of the people in the household, studied their habits, and memorized all the necessary information.

She stored the information in her memory.

Edmund Fanning: age 49, the president of the Fanning Company.

Joann Fanning: age 46, mother of Cecelia, Riley, and Penelope Fanning, a former model.

Cecelia Fanning: age 17, eldest Fanning child, student at the Rose Academy.

Riley Fanning: age 11, second Fanning child, student at Parth Elementary.

Penelope Fanning: age 4, last Fanning child.

Damiel Jorge: age 18, bodyguard to Riley Fanning, student at Salderwood High.

Mick Daweson: age 24, bodyguard to Penelope, in charge of security at Fanning Mansion.

Marie Jones: age 21, maid

She read up on all she could about schools and such. She found that she had to attend Salderwood High School with Damiel, though he was a grade up than her, and pick up Cecelia at her school afterwards. She was given the room opposite Cecelia's and across from Damiel and Riley's rooms (separate).

Cecelia had a closet that was even larger than Ashlee's room itself. As unhappy as Cecelia was with the idea of Ashlee being her bodyguard, she lent her clothes saying, "Get rid of those trash clothes." Ashlee was more than happy to comply. Getting rid of her old life was nothing short of happiness for her. But she couldn't give up her gloves, they were the only things keeping her from setting the Fanning's home on fire. As it was, even Cecelia admitted that the gloves were of good quality.
