Chapter 8: Missing

Ashlee cursed herself for not doing her proper duty as a bodyguard. It was her fault that this had happened to Cecelia. If she had just stayed with her then this wouldn't have happened.

She heard another horrendous shriek from the room inside. It was easily recognizable as Cecelia's voice now. But there was a deep booming laugh that followed. Ashlee shivered. Even though she had been trained to not show her feelings, it was hard to keep from showing them now.

She ran up the stairs with blood dripping down her leg. She reached a door made of metal. She hammered on the door with her fist but the metal was obviously too strong for regular strength. There was another shriek followed by a laugh. The screams were getting quieter each time while the laughs got louder.

Ashlee's leg throbbed but she ignored it. There was a slicing sound from inside the room that her sharp ears picked up. Blood pounded in her ears.

Ashlee's right hand motioned towards her left gloved hand but stopped. If she made a fire this close to Cecelia, it was almost guaranteed that she'd die. The man would die also but it wasn't worth Cecelia dying as well.

There was a last dying scream and laughter drowned it out. The one string that kept her tied to sanity broke and she exploded in rage.

She remembered her old self, and how hard she had worked to keep her powers at a minimum. She had been very careful to keep them under control. But now, it was useless; the imaginary seal that kept her powers hidden was now void.

She screamed in outrage and kicked the door down. She ran inside and saw a man whose face she didn't recognize holding Cecelia's limp figure. A sharp knife was pressed to her throat. There was a deep cut on her shoulder.

Ashlee saw that there were no frayed threads and realized that the knife was no joke.

"Stay back," he cautioned. He dug the point of the knife into Cecelia's throat. Ashlee didn't respond and inched forward keeping a close eye on his face. She had already memorized his face and movements. He had a scar over one eye. It started from the top of his eyebrow and went all the way to the corner of his mouth. It made him look like he was scowling even though he wasn't.

She glanced at his face then his hand. She already knew that his heart would skip a beat if he dug his knife even deeper into her throat. She noticed that he was deliberately missing her vital points in her neck. This man was trained but not as trained as she had been at the laboratory.

But for right now, she had to make him think that she was weak. She quickly looked around and memorized the layout of the room. Even though she could take him out right now, it would help her more to know who had hired him, or if he had done it by himself. But she seriously doubted it. He seemed to know all the vital points, but it was sloppy work.

She made an estimated guess that he was only employed by others. She put a scared expression on her face. She couldn't make it be known that she was the eldest Fanning's bodyguard.

"Le-let her go," she whispered. She took the fear and made it her own. It made her heart thump like crazy and her throat went dry. The man smiled viciously at her. Ashlee hurriedly looked around once more pretending to find an exit. She already had noticed that the room had no windows, though one of the walls was peeling. She would crack it there.
