It's all I can do to stay silent at Katelyn's side as the Doctor lands the Tardis in Manhattan. We climb up to that dreaded rock ledge- the Doctor with that book, Melody Malone- where everything started to change. Tears threaten to spill from my eyes as the others eat. Katelyn notices and raises her eyebrows, but I just shake my head. She doesn't ask anymore about it. We've grown close these last few weeks, neither very comfortable around the Doctor anymore and neither able to return home. I never got to know Rory much. No more than I learned from the show. As for Amy, we tolerate each other for the Doctor's sake. But I'll really miss having them around.
"Grace!" The Doctor suddenly shouts. I force a smile onto my face and turn to face him. "Ever been to New York?"
"No, actually," I reply, shaking my head. "Until I met you, I hadn't even left Nebraska."
"Well then," he says, tipping his glass towards me, "it's your lucky day!" I clench my hands in my lap and face the other way. I mutter a reply through my teeth.
Rory, after a kind of gross moment of flirting with Amy, goes to get coffee. Amy leans with her back against the Doctor and asks him to read to her. I notice my nails digging into my palms and release my grip. Four little crescent indents line the bottom of my hand. The Doctor reads, "Hello. . . Rory?!"
"What's Rory doing in a book?!" Amy exclaims. I hit my forehead with my hand. Thankfully, no one but Katelyn notices.
"Tardis! Now! Everyone, go, go!" The Doctor yells, taking off in the direction of the Tardis. I run after him and Amy, Katelyn at my heels.
"A date! Does she mention a date?" The Doctor yells at Amy. She frantically searches through the book until she finds one and reads it to the Doctor.
"But she says it'll be impossible to land!" Amy says, worried. The Doctor just scoffs.
"Hold onto something," I mutter to Katelyn. She grabs the railing. I grip the console just in time for the Tardis to begin jostling around violently. Katelyn smiles at me and mouths a thank you. I laugh silently. The Tardis lands and the console starts smoking.
"Out! Everybody out, now!" he pulls Amy by the hand and runs out the doors. Once we're all out, he gets a fire extinguisher and sprays inside. "Extractor fans on!" The smoke begins to clear.
"Doctor, we have to get Rory!" Amy whines.
"I tried to go back, but we're right back where we started. In 2012. I need. . . Landing lights. An anchor, or a signal, for the Tardis to hold onto. Alright it should be safe now, everyone back inside." He guides us in and starts looking through the book again. "Early Chin dynasty. . ." He whispers, and pulls some levers. The next minute, we've landed again. "Come on! No time to lose!" His neck jerks to the side and he's Eleven. I'm a little relieved, actually. He needs to be in this form for this. For Amy and Rory and River. But I can't go with him. I could mess everything up. I can't save Amy and Rory. The Doctor would never meet Clara and he could die. Clara's the only reason he's still alive.
"Uh, Doctor?" I say hesitantly. "I think I'll stay here actually."
"Me too," Katelyn says, probably curious as to why I was staying behind. He steps closer to us.
"Are you sure? I could use your help." I shake my head.
"I know too much about today. If I come, I'll try to change it." He looks confused and a little frightened, but agrees and steps out the door.
"Wait!" I can't help yelling. I pull Amy into a hug. "Keep him safe," I whisper. I'm talking about Rory, but for now, she'll have to think I mean the Doctor.
"Oh. . . Okay," she replies and hugs me back. The Doctor looks even more scared now, but flashes me a smile as he exits with the woman I'll never see again.
"Alright, what's going on?" Katelyn asks as soon as they're gone.
"Not here. They could come back in any second. Upstairs." We run upstairs and sit in the lounge. There's a huge T.V. on one wall that plays every program that's ever aired in the Universe and plush couches that line the other walls. Katelyn looks at me expectantly. I take a deep breath and reply,
"This is the day Amy and Rory die. Rory was taken back in time by a weeping angel. River, the Doctor's wife, is helping him while he's there. But. . . The angels will end up taking them both. Anyway, right now they're getting an anchor for River to guide the Tardis in. The year they're in is full of weird timey-wimey things. Oh, gosh I'm horrible at explaining."
"It's okay, keep going! How do they die?!" She practically begs. But I don't want to talk about it anymore.
"Spoilers." I reply simply.
