Chapter 26
I was in a bad mood for the rest of the week to say the least. I had barely spoken to anyone as all the teachers kept a close eye on me to make sure I attended both after school and lunch detention. Even if the others also managed to land themselves there, Mrs. Birmingham was not allowed to leave the room anymore.
Mother had begun using her home office more often as well. Probably on orders from my father. After our conversation, I realized that what they feared the most was getting their reputation ruined in the media. And since father had to be at the office, mother was stuck playing prison guard.
So when Jayden told me he was hosting a party that Friday night, I almost whooped in joy. Finally, I would get some freedom.
That’s how I found myself in Jayden’s guestroom with Sofia right after detention ended. No way would I risk going home to my mother. I wouldn’t be able to leave at all.
The only positive thing about this week had been that neither Reagan nor Damian approached me after the fight. Sometimes I would catch Damian looking at me with a sly look in his eyes. It made me feel uneasy and slightly uncomfortable. But he kept his distance.
Sofia was standing with her head inside the small closet in the room. She was talking at max speed, so fast I barely caught what she was rambling on about.
“--- It’s just that you haven’t been around, and this is the first time we’ve actually got to talk since it happened. I just mean that you could have done better than that.” Sofia finished her long rant and I tuned back into the conversation.
“I know. She just shocked me,” I replied, thinking back to the slap Reagan gave me.
“I guess it was kind of awesome. I didn’t know she had that in her. But she’s still a bitch,” Sofia told me as she came out of the closet. Her hands were behind her back, probably hiding the clothes she had picked out for me. Unlike Riley and me, Sofia and I were the same height, so her clothes should fit me very well.
A smirk covered her face, and when she got close enough, Sofia threw the clothes she had picked out for me on the bed. I stared blankly at the little fabric she had given me.
“What the hell is this, Fee?” I asked, scooting away from the clothes.
In front of me lay a very small, very tight black dress. While I had gotten comfortable in the new clothes Trinity had chosen for me, this was a whole new dimension. I knew without a doubt that this dress would barely cover my ass and barely hang on top. It was also strapless.
“Oh come on, Mel. It’s sexy and daring. Just perfect for you. And I know someone who will definitely like it,” she said in a teasing tone.
I wanted to face-palm. “You need to get over the delusion that Jayden likes me, Fee. We’re friends, and barely that.”
But my subconscious brought me back a week – to Trinity’s party – when Jayden had his hands on my hips and the warmth that came with his touch. I fought to keep off the blush that was sure to come. Luckily, Sofia had already gone back into the closet and was searching for clothes for herself.
“It’s not a delusion, Mel. I’ve never seen Jayden open up to someone like he does to you. Except for me, of course. But I’m sure not even Landon knows as much about him as you do.”
I wasn’t convinced. I only knew the most basic stuff about him, nothing personal, except for a few details, like his parents living separate despite still being married. Heck, I didn’t know if he had a sibling or not. I didn’t know much about Sofia either though. Right now, that kind of bothered me.
