1947, after WWII
"You -- you can't do this!" I exclaimed, slamming my hands down with a loud 'bang!'. My boss regarded me with a cold glare, one I almost feared. "Do not speak to me in that tone, girl. I am your boss. You can not, and will not, disobey direct orders from me." I was horrified, and by the scowl my boss gave, it showed on my face. He raised a gloved hand, standing. It reached my cheek sooner than I anticipated, but I stood my ground, I couldn't give him the satisfaction. Even if my cheek stung and I could feel it swell, I paid no mind it it. "Prussia is officially dissolved. Prussia does not exist. Prussia was never even a country." he seethed, folding his hands behind his back. "Prussia was the very source of of Germany's militarism: the cause of WWII."
I grimaced, averting my gaze bitterly. My blood boiled at his words. "Prussia had nothing to do with Germany's acts during the War." I argued, raising my voice. "Prussia is a noble man and a noble country--!"
"Prussia need not have existed. Prussia was apart of the Reich. Do not bullshit me, the world can do without it. All Prussia did was force its way into the acceptance of other European Powers!" My boss looked down on me, as if ready to strike. I bit my lip, averting my gaze as he seethed. "Get everything Prussian out of my fucking sight." He waved a hand, looking down on me as if I were a peasant.
"Prussia will not hold our nation back any longer. We can not afford to go leisurely, for now that I am in charge, you will see how we will rise up! We are not destined to repeat history, we will create anew." He pointed an accusing finger at my chest, jabbing with every word he said. "Stand behind me and you will see just how great of a leader I will be. No longer will we be oppressed by other nations! We will divide and conquer, rivaling even the Roman Empire! We stand alone and stand as one!"
1961
I looked around the city of Berlin, relishing in what peace we could cling to. Germany was by my side, calmly walking as we surveyed the area. Prussia held his hands behind his head, yawning as the sun began rising. Germany had been split up into four zones, Prussia, the east, going to the Soviets. Germany, the west, had been given to America and England as of now and I was only lucky to not have seen their faces anywhere. As for me, I was split into east and west. Since my east was right above Germany's east, that part of me was given to the Soviets. I sort of became part of Germany as well, my own country slowly merging with them. I let out a sigh, giving the sun a good, hard look before shaking my head.
A figure came rushing by, slamming into me. We fell on top of each other, newspapers flying about and landing on my face. Prussia and Germany hauled us up as I peeled the paper from my cheek. "I am so, so sorry! Are you alright miss?" I turned to the teen-aged boy. He was simply a delivery boy, but damn was he quite the looker. His hair was as dark as coal, skin as pale as sand, and eyes so familiar I almost got chills. "No, it's quite alright. Are you okay?" The boy nodded, hastily gathering his bundles of paper.
I began helping him, glimpsing at the front page before doing a double-take. "What the..." Prussia peered over my shoulder as I stood straight, absolutely mortified at the photo. "Excuse me, but what is this?" I questioned, pointing at the photo. The boy stuffed the bundles in his messenger bag, giddy and full of nervous energy. "It's the latest story! Since the railroads have stopped going to the east and they aren't letting anyone in, or out of the east, barbed wire has been set up to separate the east and west of Germany, but soon enough, it will stretch all the way to (C/n)'s east, sealing off that half of the country. I couldn't believe it myself when I snapped some shots of these events!"
I furrowed my brows, looking at the boy in incredulity. "They're what?"
"They've built a border made of barbed wire, or so it looks as of now. This is a developing story -- and one I am not too happy about..." I licked my chapped lips, taking in the sight of the boy once again. He looked too familiar that it set me on edge. "Boy, what is your name?" He adjusted his cap. "Bach Friedrich, pleasure to meet you." I knitted my brows together and pursed my lips. "You're Miss. (C/n), aren't you?" I hesitantly nodded. "Then that must be Mr. Germany! And..." Bach furrowed his brows. "I thought Prussia was dissolved..."
Said boy looked as if he had been stabbed. I ignored Bach's previous comment. "Anyway, I have to deliver this news to the people! It was great meeting you!" Bach rushed off, disappearing down the street. "Can they stop telling people I'm dead?" Prussia bitterly said, crossing his arms. "Hey, if you're dead, that means you don't have to pay taxes."
I ignored the two as Prussia began to finger-gun Germany, to his dismay. Beginning to walk towards the border, I took note of the line of barbed wire marking the border, guards glancing at us without interest. "Schwester?" I stopped in front of the bunched up wire, pursing my lips. "I see Russia never ceases to make his moves. He is always a step ahead...always..." I mumbled, placing a finger to my chin.
August 13, 1961
Since my country was practically one with Germany as of now, my citizens roamed free through the streets of Berlin. They held grim expressions, realizing that nothing would be the same. I could only assume my boss finally got down to business and began putting his motives into motion. He was probably collaborating with the Soviets, but as of now, I had other things on my mind. Bach was alive, reincarnated somehow. But why? Why here out of all places during such another dreadful time? Hadn't the poor boy been through enough?
As for Prussia, where was he? I hadn't seen him in a few days, and there was no way he somehow disappeared, right? I tried not to worry, but what if he disappeared? What if he finally left for good? My stomach churned as I glared at the pavement. I needed to find him soon.
As I strolled through the fairly empty streets, a sudden feeling of dread broke my train of thought. Where the border of barbed wire once stood was now replaced with a cement wall. It was at least over seven feet, maybe up to nine. Barbed wire created a border over the top, as a means of preventing people from escaping. There were some watch towers in construction, maybe one or two already finished. Soldiers were stationed on both sides, the ones on the west completely puzzled or angered.
"My son is still on the other side!"
"It was those Commies, wasn't it?!"
"I'll fucking slaughter those damn Commies! I have family over there who haven't been able to escape!"
"The phone lines to the east aren't working!"
A crowd began to form over all the commotion, some even climbing the wall to just wave at their families on the other side. Women and children began to cry, fearful of what could become of their kin.
As I surveyed the wall and studied it, I paced in thought. If my boss really was cooperating with the Soviets, then he must have funded the project or something. If he had nothing to do with it, then I'll be damned. "It seems that the Commies and our ruler put up the wall." I tapped a soldier on the shoulder. He stood at attention, immediately recognizing my face. "Soldier, have you any idea what the meaning of this is?"
"No, Ma'am. The wall was built overnight. Soldiers on the other side aren't letting anyone out of the east, though, Ma'am." I pursed my lips disdainfully, fidgeting with my collar. I only just realized I forgot my scarf at home. "Miss (C/n)!" a voice called. I turned around, folding my hands behind my back. "Bach?" He gave a forced smile, fiddling with his pen and notepad. "Do you have any family over there? On the east, I mean?"
Bach shook his head, to my relief. "My mother and father died when I was young." I nodded sympathetically. "I see... I'm sorry to hear that." Bach forced an innocent grin. "It's alright."
"(C/n)!" I looked to my left to see Germany. He looked a bit dazed at the sight before him, his expression perplexed. "Have you seen Prussia?" I questioned, pulling on Germany's sleeve. He shook his head. "He's gone missing. I've scaled the area too and questioned local authorities. No one has seen him."
My gaze went back to the wall, stomach churning. "Stay clear, everyone!" I shouted, taking a running stance. Germany cast me a 'what the fuck are you doing' expression before I began sprinting at the speed of sound.
"ARE YOU CRAZY?!"
I ignored the cries of reason. He must be on the other side. He had to be. I ran halfway up the wall before I had to propel myself up. I made a mad grab for the wall's ledge, hauling my small body up. "(C/n), get down from there!" Germany shouted. His cheeks were red with anger as I stood. "Do you know what the Soviets could do to you?!" I sent Germany a smile of reassurance, eyes drifting to Bach.
"I'll come back. I promise."
Then, I jumped.
