The Fall

You walk down the road to the graveyard. You pass many graves as you continue, and the silence that fills your ears is welcomed.

This was your 5th visit this week.

You finally see the grave that you're looking for, and stop in front of it. You stare down at the stone before you snap back into reality.

"Hey," You say as you stuff your hands into your pockets. "How's it going?"

You wait for a few seconds before sighing and sitting down next to it.

"Yeah. I thought so." Your face returns to it's normal expression. "I, uh, brought you something." You pull a small box out of your jacket pocket. You open the lid and take out it's contents.

You hold the necklace up in the air as if you're showing it to someone.

"Do you remember this?" You ask, your smile growing slightly wider as you hold the charm in your hand to look at it. "Remember how me and Alex scrapped up just enough money to get it for you for your birthday? You used to wear it all the time! You refused to take it off..." You lean forward and carefully lay it on the grass in front of the stone.

You sit there and stare at the sky for a few long minutes, trying to think of good conversation topics.

"Oh!" You say, suddenly remembering something. "Alex and I started taking dancing lessons. I tried to tell her I'm too lazy to dance, but she talked me into it. She's actually really good!" You pause to laugh a little. "I'm not, though."

"She's doing well in school, too. All A's. You would be so proud." You let a small leaf bug crawl onto your hand.

"We miss you." You say softly after a few more moments, setting the bug back down. "I miss you. Alex was too young to have really known you, but I remember." You feel tears come to your eyes, but you blink them away and put on your normal smile.

"Heh." You sniffle and wipe your eyes. "I shouldn't be crying. You've already been gone for years now..."

You take a deep breath, looking down at your lap. Your eyes shoot back at the stone, reminding yourself why you came in the first place.

"... It's gotten worse..." You say eventually. "I can feel my identity slipping between my fingers." You stare down at your hands.

Your skin shifts between many different shades and colors, never staying the same for more than one second.

"I don't have anything anymore." You whisper, the tears returning to your eyes. "I don't have a favorite color, or a favorite food. I don't have a skin color. I don't have a hair color or specific length. I don't even have my own name. Now it's just... (Y/n)."

You blink and smile as you lean back a little.

"Alex doesn't notice." You say. "I think I'm just going insane. It would make sense after everything that's happened."

You laugh nervously. "I don't even remember what happened anymore... But maybe that's best, right?"

"Man," you say after another few seconds. "Today you're dead silent."

Your smile widens slightly as you laugh at your own joke. It echos off the trees around the graveyard, and you quickly stop.

"Shit, I am going crazy." You raise one hand to hold your forehead. "Anyway, I really need to get this next part off my chest before I..."

You take a deep breath and begin.

"You know, I've been thinking..." You start staring off at the blue sky. "Remember those old stories you used to tell us? About the monsters?"
