I was awoken by the feeling of a small hand shaking me. I had gotten up to see only Charlotte in the cave with me and Bellamy nowhere to be seen. "Hey Char, where's Bellamy?" I asked, slight concern laced in my voice.
"What, Marie? Worried about me?" Bellamy said while walking back into the cave. I rolled my eyes at his stupid comment, but maybe it did have some truth behind it. "The acid fog has cleared out by the way." I nodded and made my way to the entrance of the cave, Bellamy and Charlotte right behind me.
Bellamy and I called out to the other group members we got separated from when we were running from the fog. "Jones?"
"We're here!" The three of us walked over to where the voice had come from and we came to find out that Atom was still missing and was somewhere in the forest by himself.
I was walking close by the caves still hoping Atom got to a safe place and didn't get caught in the fog. A scream erupted from the forest around me and that scream belonged to Charlotte. I sprinted to where she was, thinking a grounder had gotten to her, but what I saw was almost as bad as the grounders. It was Atom.
Bellamy got next to me a couple seconds later and went straight over to the left of Atom on the ground, myself on the right. Up close was even worse than far away. Atom had blisters all over his arms, chest, and face. His eyes were a foggy white showing that he was now blind, and his breathing was uneven and shallow.
Atom had been saying something so quietly that the two of us had to lean in closer to hear him. He just kept repeating 'Kill me.' over and over again. Charlotte walked up to us and handed Bellamy her knife and said something I couldn't quite make out.
"Go back to camp. Charlotte," he said looking over at her, "you, too." Bellamy looked to me next once Charlotte had walked off. "You should go too. You don't have to see this."
"I'm not leaving you!" I exclaimed looking at him. "I would never leave you. Especially not now." I said grabbing his hand and giving it a tight squeeze.
I looked up and saw Clarke walking over to us. She went down on her knees beside me and hugged me. By the look in her eyes, I knew Atom couldn't be saved from this.
"Hey Atom, it's Jordan. Remember me?" He just nodded his head and grabbed my hand in his.
"Jordan, kill me, please. Tell Octavia it had to be done. Tell her I went peacefully."
"l'll tell her. Want to hear a story about a girl, Atom?" Again, he just nodded and squeezed my hand. "There was a young girl who had very little freedom to do anything. She didn't have friends and she was alone for most of her life. This said girl met two of her best friends in secret one day, and finally she wasn't alone." I said while taking the knife from Bellamy's hand. "Her happiness didn't last long though. The very little freedom she had was suddenly taken away from her in the matter of seconds, and where she went was her own little personal hell. In her personal hell, she was, once again, alone, raped, and tormented, but she finally had a chance to get freedom. She had a shot at happiness again. She was reunited with her best friend after so many years. This girl was happy again. The end." and with that, I stabbed him in the neck so his death was quickly and painless.
"That's about you isn't it, Jordan?" I looked over and saw Clarke crying and wiping the tears away as they came. "What exactly happened when you were in the skybox?"
"A lot." That's all I said before I dropped the knife and walked back to camp with Atom's blood on my hands. We haven't been here a week and i'm already a murderer. What is Earth doing to me?
---
I didn't want to see Octavia's reaction to Atom because I know she had liked him. I went straight to Finn just like I always used to whenever I was sad or upset. We just sat in his tent and I cried for hours until I slowly felt myself drifting to sleep.
---
I woke up to find that it had turned dark, and Bellamy and his group got back from getting Atom's body. I walked up to Bellamy and sat down next to him by the fire.
"How is Octavia?" I asked generally concerned for her since we had grown to be friends ever since we met on the drop ship the day we came to Earth.
"She's upset, but she'll be okay eventually. I wish Earth was peaceful again like it was nearly a century ago." He responded and sank down further into his spot around the fire, if it was even possible.
"Well I wouldn't call Earth friendly since there was a nuclear war that sent us to space for 97 years." I looked up at him to see him smiling at me. I couldn't help but smile back realizing I had accomplished exactly as I planned. My plan was to make him happy again. I looked back to the fire and leaned my head against Bellamy's shoulder while his arm wrapped around my waist.
