“Hello mummy!” I was talking to my mother on the phone, while packing my suitcase. It was the last day of the first semester.
“Hello Scarlette! Are you done with your packing?”
“No mummy. I am just doing that. By the way mummy, do you remember I had told you about Dan?”
“Yes, I do. And I also do remember that you’ll stay at his place for a week.”
“Good that you have finally started eating almonds. It’s definitely working on your memory.”
“You bet!!” she said, laughing.
We talked for another fifteen minutes. I complained to her about Shawn’s hasty and unforeseen drama and how I broke his fingers.
“You broke a boy’s fingers?! When will you stop being a thug and become a civilized person?” she asked, apparently very shocked, since she knew that I had fought (physically) with some of my school boys too.
“Oh come on mom! If he cannot be civilized, why should I be civilized?”
“Then there’ll be absolutely no difference between you two.”
“Mom, that’s an outdated philosophy. Besides, I used my wit and physical strength to tackle him. He used a KNIFE! What did you expect me to do? Fall down on my knees, start crying, and beg for mercy? No mom, that’s against my principles.”
“Fighting with others is definitely in your principles”, she mumbled.
“If it’s in my defence or someone else’s betterment, then yes, it is in my principles.”
“Alright”, she said, finally giving up. “You go, complete your packing. I am really sleepy.”
“Okay mummy. Bye!”

Our vacation had come to an end, and the second semester had begun. I was supposed to go to a club with my friends in the evening. I was confused between two dresses, so I asked my roommate Shruti for help. One was a black dress, short in front and longer behind. It was initially sleeveless but I had told mummy to stitch short, net sleeves to it since I wasn’t very fond of sleeveless dresses. It had a round neck, in which my collarbones were quite evident. It was elastic about two inches above the waist, so that the lower portion came out quite voluminous and gave a frock like appearance. The lower portion was laced with a shiny, silver-ish lace. The upper portion had floral embroidery, done completely with a silver thread.
The other one was a straight dress and chiefly burgundy in colour. Like the first one, this too had short, net sleeves and had elastic two inches above the waist, but this did not give it a frock like feature. It had artificial flowers all along the neck, running down in a straight line till it met the elastic. These flowers were black in colour and were made of a net material, with silver glitter sprinkled on them. The lower portion was of a velvet-y material. So, it did not require many additions.
“Wear the burgundy one. It really goes with your figure. Wear your black heels along with it”, Shruti said.
“Okay.”
“And quickly get ready. We have to pick up Sana (our school friend) in half an hour.”
“Alright. I won’t take more than fifteen minutes. Don’t worry.”
We picked up Sana on our way and then went to the club. We met some of our college girlfriends (Emma, Chloe, Sophia and Florence) too, and introduced them to Sana, and vice – versa. We started talking, and this was how the conversation had gone:
“Scarlette, did you tell Sana about Daniel?” asked Emma.
“What about him?” I asked.
“That he is your boyfriend?” Emma asked with her eyebrows raised.
“What? What? What? I don’t know about this Daniel. Tell me!” exclaimed Sana, jumping on the stool.
“He is NOT my boyfriend. He is just a very good friend of mine. And for heaven’s sake stop jumping Sana!!” I scolded.
“Okay okay, but please tell me about him!” she said, still very excited.
“Alright.” I told her about Daniel. I gave her each and every detail of each and every second that I had spent with him.
“So now can we stop discussing him?” I asked. The six girls exchanged mischievous grins, but wiped it off as soon as they saw me glaring at them.
“Okay, so let’s stop talking and dance a little bit. We might attract some boys”, said Chloe. She gave us a naughty wink and then ran off. We followed suit.
