(Alexandra Tucker)
I take a deep breath before pushing open the front door to my house and walking inside, bracing myself for the lecture soon to follow.
"Alex?" my father's voice calls from the kitchen, and relief immediately floods through me.
"Oh, hey Dad," I greet him walking into the kitchen and sitting on a stool. My father is still dressed in his white coat and cap from his surgery and he looks as if he hasn't slept in days.
"Where's Mom?" I ask carefully, glancing around the house for any sign of the woman.
"She's working late tonight. Looks like it's just you and me, kid." Dad smiles at me and I surprise him by smiling back.
"Where were you today?" he asks, shrugging off his jacket and hanging it on a hook by the door.
"Oh, um," I begin, debating whether or not to tell him about Gavin, but deciding against it because Gavin is planning on surprising him tomorrow.
"I went to the Dixon's, then to talk to Will, and then I was at Mike's." My father's eyes sadden at the mention of Will and his family, so I walk over and wrap my arms around him. He hugs me back and strokes my hair protectively.
"I won't tell your mother that you were with Michael. I won't ever do that. Mike is a good kid, I love him, and I think you could benefit by spending time with him," Dad speaks softly, and I hug him tighter.
I don't know why he lets himself get pushed around by my mother; he is such a nice man who has the best intentions, but they are tarnished by the reputation of Lori Tucker. I wonder if he even loves her.
"Now, don't you have exams to be studying for?" he correctly assumes, pulling away and holding me at arms length. "I'll make dinner and call you down when it's done. In the meantime, go memorize some formulas."
I laugh and nod, running up the stairs to do just that.
