I slowly tucked a piece of my long black sleek hair behind my ear as my eyes met my own figure in the bathroom mirror. I sighed deeply as I grazed my hand across my supple baby like skin although I did have a few acne scars. Andrew and I were planning to go out tonight, I hoped I looked at least decent. Slightly tugging on my cropped sweater I heard a soft knock at the front door. "Coming!", I yelled as I grasped the strap of my LV bag, and slipped on my millennial pink NMD's. Slowly I made my way up the few stairs that lead me to the front door. "Hey, make sure you don't come home too late Naomi.", my mom tried to say without grinning, "Did you hear that Andrew?", my mom yelled enough for him to hear through the door, "Yes, I will make sure she gets home safely.". I smiled at my mom and glanced at the time, "7:32.", I mumbled to myself, "Okay mom I'll be home by like 10 or something, love you!", I quickly said as I turned the doorknob and met faces with Andrew. "Love you too", said my mom.
"Hey babe! I was thin-", "Lets go.", Andrew said without looking at me and grabbed my hand. He seemed off, like always... maybe these days he was just having a hard time? I really had no idea. We headed over to his car, he reached into his pocket to click the button to unlock the car. As I reached for the handle I opened the door that released that "new car" odor that just brought joy to my nostrils. Placing my hand on the passenger's seat I ran my hand across the smooth leather interior."Baby your car is really nice... how lucky are you babe.", I said in awe. He patted the seat signaling me to sit down already. I sat down and closed the door as he started the car. We sped down the road and made a slight turn following what was left of the street. "Thank you for picking me up", I said quietly as I grinned looking out the window. *no response*I turned my body to meet his, he just nodded his head. I reached for the dial to turn up the volume of the radio, but then he suddenly stopped me. "Please, no", he said quietly. Letting my hand fall onto my lap, I sighed softly and gazed out the window. I had guessed we were going to our favorite vietnamese cafe. I then felt a slightly warm sensation on my left thigh. I looked to see Andrew's hand on my thigh as we pulled up to the cafe. As he turned off the car he turned to me, "Nuu... I'm sorry I've been mean lately... I know I don't always answer your calls or texts, but I'm trying ok?" he said as he looked into my eyes for some kind of answer, I just nodded and got out of the car. He ran up to the front door and opened it for me. "Thank you.", I said and made way to our favorite spot of the cafe.
"Honey! Honey! Are you here again with your boyfriend? Nice to see you again!", said Lu, one of the staff that knew us well because we were regulars. She patted my back and led us to our regular spot. The two of us sat down across from each other, "The regular? So Nuu you want thai tea boba, water on the side, and P8 (pho & brisket), and you boy want vietnamese iced coffee, and the sandwich right?", she asked as we nodded in awe. This is why we loved coming here because she knew exactly what we wanted, and was also very welcoming.
As I sat across from Andrew his eye were glued to his lap. I used my hand to give myself a bit of a boost to see what he was looking at over the table. Of course it was his phone. He was always glued to it, but yet ignored most of calls and texts. When were together he was always on his phone too and responded with short answers like a nod, or a "yep" here and there. I felt like he was tired of me, maybe even annoyed, but, however, he always made it up to me. Sitting in silence I stared out the window that had a view of the parking lot and saw a group of girls that I found familiar making their way to the cafe. I saw Andrew look out the window as well and his eyes followed the group until they entered the front doors. Even as they were being seated his eyes were glued to them. I now knew who they were, just a couple of girls I knew from biology. Yet his eyes were still focused on them, not just them, someone in particular. Lia. I always thought how no one ever tried to get at her, she just had everything. Lia's athletic, has a 4.0, she's very pretty, and sociable. I knew envy was growing in me for all the right reasons, but I tried to let it go. I tried to act like I didn't notice his actions and kept my eyes to the back of the room, impatiently waiting for the food to come.
"Honey, honey! Here's your food enjoy and half of it is on the house since you're regulars", exclaimed Lu as she ruffled my hair. I smiled politely as she made her way back to the register. I looked up to see Andrew finally focused on something else as he eyed his food. I slowly brought the bowl of pho towards me and reached for chopsticks. My movements became slow as I began to only focus on Andrew. It was like he didn't even know I was there, he hadn't even said a word to me either the whole time we had been sitting here. His eyes only moved in cycles from his food, to his phone, and back up to Lia. Not only were my movement were slow but slightly loud. As I got a hold of my wooden chopsticks I separated the two with a loud snap! He still hadn't noticed me. I then plopped the two wooden utensils into the bowl as they made a splash in the broth. Still no response. My last attempt was when I used the chopsticks to feed a large amount of noodles into my mouth and slurped them loudly, I know, I know, how rude and immature! By the time I was done he still hadn't said a thing and would look up just a bit and slightly smile but then quickly would fade into his resting face. This was it, I decided the last time he would look at her I would get up and leave. How rude to invite your girlfriend to eat but you completely ignore her for another. His eyes then slowly made his way in her direction. I put on my jacket, grabbed my bag, and stood up from the table. His eyes then jolted up. "Hey, where are you going?", he asked as if he was really concerned. I shrugged and mumbled,"I don't know...".
I then walked out to the car about to make a call to get picked up. I was upset, yes, but I just didn't know why we were like this. We used to be so talkative, and could sit in complete silence and still see the lust in our eyes. We could talk for days about the most random memories, anything. I stood there pondering as I felt a presence in front of me. "Naomi? Naomi! Why are you acting like this?", he asked again. I just shook my head, "I think I'm gonna call someone to pick me up... you can go inside and finish your meal I guess.", I said looking at my feet. "You guess?", Andrew scoffed. The tension built up and I couldn't take it. "You know what just stop! I don't know why you asked me out today and don't even try to acknowledge me one bit, not even a single word Andrew, your eyes are glued on that stupid phone of yours, but yet you don't answer my calls or texts! And let us not forget about who you had your eyes on the whole time! Who cares if I'm jealous or whatever it is, I have every right to be. I'm not even in your sight!", I said breathlessly. "If I'm not what you wan- want anymore just say so... maybe it'd hurt less than find-" I said as he interrupted me with his embrace, and he patted my hair. "Naomi, please stop.", he said quietly, and calm. "Lets go", he said as he pulled me towards his car. He opened the passenger door and shoved me in the car, and shut the door behind him.
