Adult life sucks for the most part.
Vampire adult life sucks as well.
Wanting to blend in with our surroundings means having to wake up and adult.
What do I mean?
I have to work.
After the Neon Wes thought it would be smart for me to wear contacts.
You know since no human has bloodlust and eyes start to glow violet.
Wes comes by the apartment before Mason woke up. I cannot wear my sunglasses so that will have to do.
Wes rolls his eyes when I tell him Bella had to wear contacts when she first met up with her father after she turned.
He laughed when I asked if I would need more than one pair.
The day is going by slow as normal. I am at the counter staring at Mason as he sweeps up the floor. His eyes are droopy since he did not get to sleep as much as he would like.
"Hey, keep an eye on the hottie I see...I wonder if he is single," Lindsey says watching Mason sweep up around the front.
Annoyance creeps up unexpectedly, "Why do you say that?" I snap at her and she takes a step away from me.
"What the hell is eating you, Abigail?" She turns around and walks to the back but not before muttering bitch behind her.
I roll my eyes and return to wiping the counter.
"Abigail!" My eyes go to Mason who is running his finger through his hair. "When do we get a lunch break?"
Lunch?
"You can go get lunch now if you want." I look over at the clock and it's eleven.
"What do you want to eat?" He asks as he sweeps the last of the trash off the floor and dumps it in the trashcan.
"Pizza?" I say as it pops into my head.
"Okay let me put this away and we can head over to a pizzeria." Mason walks to the back.
"We're getting lunch," I tell Wanda as she stares at me and nods.
I pull out my phone and dial Wes quickly. He answers in the second ring.
"Hel — " I cut him off.
"Wes, can I eat human food?"
"Yes, but it's not going to satisfy your cravings."
"So I am good to have lunch with my coworkers?"
"Yes," he sighs, "but there really isn't any point to — "
"Thanks." I hang up as Mason comes back pulling off his apron.
"Let's go," he smiles at me.
I nod and take off my apron as well leaving it on the counter.
Lindsey is staring at me the entire time from behind the counter glaring at me and I can feel my fangs fighting to break through my gums.
Don't tempt me.
I put on my sunglasses and we head out. Mason picks a small pizzeria that is only a couple of stores down from Starbucks and I swear I must have passed this place at least a hundred times but it has never caught my attention.
The mismatch tablecloths and chairs give it a unique feel to it. The place is empty with the exception of a lonely man in the corner eating.
The man in the front takes us to an empty table and Mason pulls out my chair gesturing me to sit down with his head. I stare at him and he gestures for me to sit down again.
No one has ever done that for me before I sit down and he hands me a napkin. Mason thanks the man and sits in front of me. We sit in silence going over their menu. The man comes back and takes our orders and rushes back to the kitchen.
"Why did you pick this place?" I pull my sunglasses up to my hair and my eyes scan around the place.
Mason sinks into the chair and shrugs.
"It has this homey vibe to it don't you think?"
"Well, yeah, like my home. Nothing in here matches."
His smile beams at me and I can't help but smile back at him.
Our food arrives and Mason digs in. I take a small hesitate bite and my taste buds explode. The taste of the tomato sauce, cheese, crust, and pepperoni are easily distinguished with my new taste buds.
"Mmmm," I mumble as I swallow down my mouthful.
"It's good isn't it."
"You have no idea."
We eat in silence for a while. After Mason finishes he stretches and takes a deep breath.
"You're full?"
"Stuffed," he grins, "we should head back to work I don't want to get fired on my first day."
He scoots his chair back and sticks his hand out to help me out as well. I take his hand and get out. My hand goes into my pocket but Mason shakes his head and drops a twenty on the table.
Yet again I am not used to this kind of treatment. We head to the door and Mason holds it open for me. My hand pulls down my sunglasses it is becoming like second nature for me. We head out and start walking toward Starbucks.
"So, do you do this with all the girls you know?" I ask as my curiosity gets the best of me.
"Do what?"
"Um, take them out and then act like a total gentleman in a world where most men are assholes," I stare at him not worried about tripping on anything in front of me.
"Yes, I guess that's how I was raised," his eyes soften and he sighs. I drop the conversation.
The rest of the day goes flying by in a blink of an eye.
"I'll see you two tomorrow and Mason you're a great worker," Wanda says as we are getting ready to leave.
"Thanks." Mason leaves his apron under the counter like I did and then he starts walking towards the door where I am waiting.
"Mason!" Someone shouts from behind him and he turns around. I can't stop my eyes from going in that direction as well.
It's Lindsey walking towards him, "Yes?"
"I wanted to know if you had any plans after work," she chimes at him with her fake smile and fake innocence. I bite back a hiss that I catch before it escapes me.
"Actually I kind of want to rest you know this being my first day and all." He responds at her and he turns to look at me but my eyes lash to the side and I make it seem as if I am not paying attention to them.
"Well how about tomorrow?" She asks.
"I'll see," there is something coursing through me and I want to rip her head off her shoulder.
"Okay then, see you tomorrow. Bye Abigail!"
She gives me a small wave and I glare at her. I don't dare talk since my fangs are all the way out and I can feel my body ready to go after her.
"Come on let's go home," Mason says as he holds the door open for me. I walk out taking a deep breath trying to calm myself but for some reason, it is becoming harder with every passing second.
I can't hurt her, I won't hurt her, and I will not hurt her no matter how much I want to!
Yep, keep telling yourself that.
