Ayah POV
It was lunchtime when it happened. Everything interesting happened at lunch. Coincidently the only time of day when I saw Percy Jackson. That guy attracted crazy like a super magnet.
Ferris and I were sitting and talking about a biology assignment as we waited for the other half of our party to join us. Across the courtyard, a girl with blonde hair and a Californian tan began walking toward the center of the space, her head turning around like she was searching for someone. Her hair was curly and pulled into a messy ponytail with strands hanging in her face. She was holding a single textbook at her side and drumming her fingers on it impatiently. She was wearing a faded blue hoodie and some worn out jeans that had been rolled up just below her knees.
The girl started to walk closer and I could see her startling grey eyes. They sparked with brilliance and calmly calculated everything around her. The same intensity I'd only ever seen once before in a pair of eyes, and those were the eyes of Percy Jackson.
"I'm looking for my boyfriend, about yay tall, dark hair, green eyes, answers to the name of Percy?" she questioned. Ferris turned in her seat to see the mystery blonde. So this was the girlfriend. Behind her, a door opened and someone came lumbering out with a panic-stricken look as he rifled through the contents of his bag.
"Yeah, he's behind you," said Ferris as she noticed Percy too. The blonde turned and scanned the terrain until she saw Percy who was now only a few feet away.
"Lose something, Seaweed Brain?" Percy nearly dropped his bag at the nickname. Usually, he hated nicknames, but she seemed to be an exception because instead of anger, he was infinitely happy to hear it. When his eyes confirmed what he'd heard he did drop his bag, this time more deliberately.
"Annabeth!" He greeted her. In a second he had closed the distance between them and had his arms gently wrapped around her waist. He pressed his lips to hers in a sweet hello kiss. Annabeth smiled into the kiss and made an inch of space between their faces.
"Hey, Perce. You left your textbook in my dorm, you idiot." Another nickname. I figured the way Percy was looking at this girl, with nothing but love and the purest form of happiness that I'd ever seen in him, she could call him whatever she pleased and he'd keep smiling.
"Oops. Can I kiss you again?" Annabeth just grinned and gave him a quick peck before removing his hands from her waist. They walked over to our picnic table hand in hand, toting the lost textbook and the backpack in total disarray. She set the textbook on the table and sifted through his papers in the beginnings of an attempt to organize it all.
"Ugh, you'll figure it out. See you later," she said. Percy turned and held her hand tighter.
"You just got here, eat lunch with us?" Annabeth sighed.
"Percy, I have work to do."
"The work can wait, just half an hour." She didn't seem convinced. He looked at her with big soft eyes and I couldn't imagine her saying no.
"Don't give me that look, Jackson, I'll throttle you."
"So you'll stay?"
"Yeah, I guess," she sighed. She sat down between Percy and Ferris and molded into Percy's side perfectly and his arm draped carelessly over her shoulder. For the first time, Percy seemed completely at ease. He wasn't fidgeting, glancing over his shoulder, flinching at loud noises, his eyes barely even darted around the courtyard. Instead, they stayed fixed on Annabeth as he began to quiz her about her day.
"So how are the royal pains?" he asked.
"Don't even get me started, the twins were arguing about who was born first and who was more mature so they could have the bigger statue so they aren't talking to each other anymore. Clarisse has been trying to get on her dad's good side so she could convince him to leave Auntie A. alone with her husband for a day. Your dad almost waged war with my mom again and I had to threaten to remove this one water feature from the third level of some hotel I'm adding, my mom tried to be reasonable with him, but he was too thick headed to see reason, I guess it runs in the family," she said pointedly. Percy laughed and let his arm fall so he could grab a granola bar from his bag.
