Little Did I Know

Little did I know

That you can speak my language.

I judged you by your looks.

I thought you didn't understand

Anything that I said.

You seemed to be full of pride.

You do have a lot of pride

In your views, your culture and place.

Not that I'm against it.

We never talked before.

I only saw you from afar

And I heard the way you spoke.

It was too full of pride.

You were too full of yourself.

We never talked before.

Until that moment.

I had to speak to you

In front of everyone.

I had to oppose what you felt was true.

Because it isn't true.

That was the first time we spoke

And I found out that you can read

As well as speak

My language.

I was taken aback

But I was fascinated

For despite the way you look

You can speak my language.

I spoke to you in my tongue

You spoke to me in yours,

We both understood each other.

You ran after me when I left

And we walked.

And talked.

A lot.

We shouldn't have.

For now you don't see me

The way you used to, anymore.

You see me as much more.

You see me as something else.

But I won't let it happen,

For our worlds are too different.

We talked, we went out,

You called, you confessed,

I pretended I couldn't hear.

You didn't get the hint.

But slowly you did

When I responded less favourably.

You were sad and so was I.

But what could I do?

You and I are too different.

That doesn't mean I don't like you.

Some people are meant to meet,

But not meant to be together.

You don't belong with me.

Oh how I'll miss how you used to sing

Those songs in my language!

Little did I know

That you can speak my language.

I knew I was done for, when I became kind of fond of a guy who is my senior, who is much more knowledgeable and who is from Northeast India. It was difficult not to like him. He's quite good looking. And he really liked me a lot. But his beliefs and his lifestyle are way too different from mine. I think it's quite unfortunate because when I discovered that he can speak my language I became fascinated and so, we conversed in each other's respective languages which wasn't very difficult. He sent me songs which he sang in the University campus. I still have those saved in my phone.
