These woods...

These woods, so lovely, dark and green,

Unlike a beauty I have ever seen,

Through the trees runs a thrill,

Merging with the wintry chill,

Giving me an everlasting bliss,

Taking me back from this dreadful abyss.

Illuminated by the afternoon rays,

These woods brighten my lonely days,

As I tread on the paths untrodden,

The soil that the rain has sodden,

The trees sway at a fervent pace

As if they've seen a familiar face.

Under the moon's silver gleam,

The forest looks like a dream,

The flowers looking serene and white,

In the stillness of this illusive night.

As I walk through the space and time,

And go deeper into the woods sublime,

With the trees I feel an age old bond

And I wonder what lies beyond

These woods so lovely, dark and green,

Unlike a beauty I have ever seen.

You could say I took inspiration from Robert Frost's poem, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening". That poem left a deep impact on my mind as I was enthralled by the description of the snow clad forest, the scenery of the white snow falling against the blackness of the night, the dread that the poet felt about himself standing in the middle of a forest likely to be owned by someone and the cold, frosty night that was slowly consuming him.
However, I also had my own share of experiences in Sikkim. There was snow everywhere, it was freezing cold but all I could think of was the starry sky and snowy mountain on which our hotel was situated. While I was writing this poem, I was also thinking about the dense forest in Delhi through which I was walking one evening with my family on the narrow, lonely path surrounded by trees and illuminated by the dim rays of the setting sun. These were two of the most beautiful sights I've ever experienced.
