Chapter 4
Giving InSkylar and Cristina left the classroom for their lunch pause. Cristina was doing her best to crutch along Skylar but it was proving difficult to do, it was still sore under her armpits and while the hand grips were cushioned, carrying her whole weight on those two delicate hands was taking a toll on her wrists as well.
"You go ahead Skylar, I will meet you later," Cristina said.
Cristina slowed down her pace, she watched her long leg cast swinging between the crutches on every step. It still felt like some big animal was hugging her thigh. Now that she was moving, she wiggled her toes because they were becoming a bit numb. She had begun to enjoy the look of her cast but not all the things she had to do differently while her leg healed.
Whenever she was out of the crowd of classmates running to grab their food or find a spot to eat, she looked ahead towards one corner of the esplanade. With her broken leg, in just a day it had become her little oasis of relaxation with a bit of privacy, or at least much more quiet than all the usual places.
She accelerated her pace once again despite the pain on her armpits, thumping and clicking those crutches in order to get there fast before someone else claimed the spot. It was not a bench and therefore not quickly taken during this lunch rush. It was an elevated wall of about 1 meter tall that surrounded a narrow but nice little garden of small plants. It was possible to sit on both long edges of the wall but she preferred the one that had a three-step stair down to a small garden that nobody seemed to appreciate. On the other side, there was some free space, usually vacant and above it a wall with rails where the esplanade ended.
Cristina took two steps down that short stairs and sat down placing her two crutches on the stairs. Then she put her right hand under the thigh of her cast and lifted her broken left leg to lay it straight on the top of that short wall where she sat.
"Here is your sandwich and drink, sweetie!" Skylar showed up at the short stairs from behind carrying Cristina's lunch.
"Thank you, Skylar" Cristina made an effort to lift to give Skylar a kiss in the cheek
Just at the last moment, Skylar turned her head left and Cristina's kiss landed on her lips that were already pursed to receive her friend's lips. As soon as Cristina's naive lips docked on her friend's, Skylar was quick to open up her lips just a little to touch Cristina's lips with the tip of her tongue.
"What the hell are you doing?" Cristina quickly withdrew from the unexpected landing zone. She did not like when Skylar did that. She rejected it but at the same time, it left her with a nice feeling fluttering in her stomach.
"Okay, okay! I could not resist it, sorry!" Skylar was visibly annoyed but said it in a hushed voice to avoid others from picking up her thing. "Now if the princess would excuse me, I have other things to tend to."
Cristina eased herself down to her seating position.
Skylar went up one step, caressed Cristina's hair a little.
Cristina looked up with puppy eyes and caught Skylar throwing her a discrete kiss in the air.
Skylar knew her best friend had already forgiven for giving way to her own pleasures.
Cristina started eating her lunch staring at her bare toes. She was still annoyed that the school bus idiot had not been gentleman enough to return the sock to her. She tried to remind herself that by not wearing the sock, she was letting everybody think she did not feel uncomfortable about it, even if it was a lie. At the same time, not wearing it would help her friend win the bet, surely there would be a split in the profits for her suffering. It was her leg after all.
All of a sudden, Cristina felt something small hitting her plaster cast, like a pebble. It did not hurt but she felt it. It was probably a seed falling from the tree that gave her a shadow.
She gave her sandwich another bite, took another sip of her juice in a can and there it was again, another knock on her cast. She saw something white bouncing to the floor, leaning forward to take a better look.
She flexed and curled her toes to exercise them, they needed some movement and her whole leg had been immobile because of the cast. She leaned forward to take a better look at the thing that hit her cast and...
"Ouch!" she curled her toes, a small white projectile had hit the upper side of her middle toe, "who is doing that?"
Cristina leaned forward again and saw someone hiding behind the column of the building where she was reclining her back. Just when she was going to recline again she saw him.
"You!, come here!" she beckoned him to her place ready to tell him a bunch of things that were probably not nice. She waited for a little while but nobody was showing. She figured he had gone away. She looked at her toes, the impact was more like a bee sting but it was gone already.
She leaned back in expectation of her aggressor, she knew he was coming and wondered who he was. Cristina considered whacking him with her crutch for being such an idiot, if not at least counter attack verbally.
