"Why can't I just live with you?" Serena stood in the doorway of her dorm room. Her boyfriend Max stood behind her, carrying her last couple of boxes in. She stood almost a foot shorter than he did so he could see over her. Girls ran past them giggling and screaming words. Preppy cheerleaders.
Serena almost dropped the box she was holding, this was completely out of her element.
"I don't belong here." They both stood in the middle of a crowded hallway.
Max nodded in agreement as they watched the girls hug each other and laugh down the hallway. They were screaming and parents were laughing with them as they went into their separate rooms.
Serena was not a girly girl, she was a girl who has tattoos and owns a sports car that she actually works on herself. Her long black hair made her stand out against these blonde bouncing girls. She leaned back into Max but he moved away fast. He did not want to comfort her, not now. He entered the room and then turned to face her, wow that was smooth he thought when he almost tripped trying to get space between him and her.
"You don't belong here, you're right" Max agreed with her, he paused while Serena turned to face him, a pissed off look on her face. He knew what she was thinking, he continued to talk so he did not have to hear about how much of a douche she thinks he is.
"But, you did promise your parents that you would live in the dorms so i can get settled in as well. I need the space, babe." He was trying to smooth things over with her, he wanted to leave, bad. And a pissed off Serena is not going to help him achieve that goal.
There was a lot of tension between them, they both felt it.
He was a paramedic and worked the graveyard shift constantly, living together and not seeing each other will be harder on Serena as she got adjusted into the new college life and town. This was only Max's thoughts, what does he know.
"Yeah, Max, that totally makes sense. We both move out here and you force me to live here while you get to live alone." Serena said sarcastic as she pushed past him and walked into her room. She set the box down on the bed. She too sat down on the bed. One of the reason that Max did not want to live with her, is because he caught her at a party with another guys tongue down her throat. This was his way at getting back at her, Serena thought. Another reason would be that he can't stay faithful to her, never have and probably never will. But she does not know that.
He set his box down too and then sat down next to her. Serena was furious, he could tell because she twirled her long hair and stared off. Her way of calming down aparently.
Serena had said sorry multiple times that night and every day since, and it's not like she slept with that random guy.
" I don't know what to say to you," She stated, not looking at him. She played with her hair and began a tiny braid, remembering that night and hating herself for getting that drunk. "You always bring it up, and honestly I don't know how much longer of this distance between us that I can take."
It was a stupid party, she just turned 18 and graduated. It went too far but still, he shouldn't act like this. It was months ago, and they were in the middle of a huge fight.
Max's heart began to race, he did not want to be the one to end this, but he was the one bringing up the past constantly.
He sighed and rubbed his face. He has been cheating on Serena way too many times to not want to be with her at all, he wanted to tell her, but he still cared. They both needed space so this is why she will stay in the dorms and he will live elsewhere.
He imagined ending it with her right now. She would cry and slap him and call him names and then that would be it. They would barely see each other as it is, this relationship is just going to drag out and then end soon enough, he motivated himself to just push through.
The only real reasons why he wanted to move here was that he got a good promotion and his parents were getting a divorce. He needed a break too, from her and from his parents.
Also, to play the field, but he told no one about that.
"I am not mad at you, Serena. I just need time to get my new job started and the new apartment sorted before I try and work things out with you. I don't need to stress myself out." He mentally smacked himself for that, he did not want to give her hope, and now she is even more mad.
"So I'm the second option?" She looked at him, and then noticed another short blond girl was standing at the doorway with boxes in hand. Serena quickly threw a smile on her face and stood up.
"Hi," She said awkwardly and loud. She was hoping that the girl, Bayleigh, who was her new roommate, has not heard much of this conversation. She too wanted to start over at this college, and dragging boyfriend drama is not going to help her achieve that.
Max felt awkward as the girls hugged and the blond girls parents stared at him. He took his leave since all the boxes were in the dorm.
Bayleigh and Serena have been non stop texting each other the second that they found out that they were going to be roommates.
Max left without another word.
Serena watched him leave with her eyes but then gave her full attention to the girl in front of her.
The tension was now gone and she was glad that Max was now gone along with it.
"Bayleigh, it's so nice to finally meet you."
