Feeling Human
I sat up in my bed. Yawning, I looked around the room confused. I looked over at Henry's sleeping form and smiled. Then I remembered. I wasn't at the Region anymore. I had escaped, it was all real.
I suddenly didn't know what to do. At the Region, my day consisted of getting up, doing training, having an hour rest in the dorm room, more training, Human intergration and then sleep. Human intergration is getting us ready to face the outdoor world, such as speaking different languages and driving. However, nothing could prepare for going out there.
I got out of the bed, walking to the door. It was just coming up for sunrise, and even though I knew this, I had never actually seen one. I wandered around the corridors. No one was up, except some guards by main doors. I kept invisible, walking to some stairs. I went up, to the next level with more rooms. But I didn't stop. I ran up the staircase, excited to see the sun. I got to the top of the staircase, bursting open the door at the top and stepping onto the roof top. I sat on the edge of the building, my legs dangling off the top. I was practically bouncing, ready to see the beauty that everyone says about.
I gasped as it began. A stream of light passed over my face, caressing me in warmth. I let out a sigh at its radiance. People didn't give it justice. Then I frowned. They tell you about the opinions of humans, what the collective majority thought, but no one could imagine it being this beautiful. I laughed at the ridiculousness of it all. A 15 year old Seraphim, who had never seen a sunrise. I was happy, for the first time, I felt happy. I needed to let it out.
'Woooo Yeah!' I screamed out, grinning from ear to ear.
Henry's POV
I groaned, waking up. My rubbed my stiff neck. I must have slept weird. I sat up and looked at my bed. My bed? Wasn't I in it? No, I wasn't. Clara was. I went round to wake her, pulling back the covers. Nothing. Blind panic wrapped around me. They took her. I ran out the door and shouted to the guards, who looked as shocked as I did.
'Where's the girl?' I shouted. They shrugged at me.
'She didn't come down this way' One guard replied. I nodded and started running to all the rooms, asking if people had seen her. Everyone gathered in the hall to help search. One man jumped onto the pedestal, facing the crowd.
'Don't you see? She's given away our location! We are no longer safe. She's escaped and has gone and told them. We need to move out!'
Some people nodded, walking away to go pack up their things, the others came closer, waiting for orders.
'Find her' I said and they dispersed. I ran up to the third level rooms, which are usually empty as they are reserved for high up ranks, and started searching through every room. However it was when I was in one room, I heard a faint 'Woo Yeah'. I smiled. Gotcha. I can't believe no one thought to try the roof. I ran up the stairs and opened the door, letting it slam against the wall.
Clara jumped at the harsh sound and turned to look at me.
'What the hell are you doing?!' I shouted at her. She stood up, looking shocked.
'I-I.... I just wanted to look at the sun' She confessed, looking down upset. I walked up to her, angry at her ignorance. She flinched and kept her head low. I looked at her. Her teeth were gritted and her eyes were tightly shut. Then it all made sense.
'They abused you didn't they? When you didn't do as you were asked' I said softly. A tear dropped from her cheek as she nodded. I pulled her closer and wrapped my arms round her while she cried.
After she had calmed down, she stepped back.
'Sorry' She said guiltily. I smiled softly at her and caressed her cheek.
'There's nothing to be sorry for'. I took her hand and started to lead her outside, when her body went limp and fell to the ground. I did the normal seraphim checks on her quickly to make sure she was stable. Her eyes had stopped glowing, which shows unconciousness. I looked at her tattoo. It was pulsing. She was developing.
When a seraphim develops, they inhabit a new power. It is random, everytime a new power starts, the body of the seraphim goes into shut down so conserve energy.
How do I know this? Well that's a complicated question. But to say I haven't seen a seraphim before Clara, would be a lie. She's not the first of her kind. They were imperfections before her. Ones who did not survive. But Clara will. I know.
I watched as her body changed to a maturer state to welcome the new power. Her waist grew smaller, her breasts and hips got bigger, her baby face became one of a beauty. Whatever this was, it was big. Her tattoo grew more up her arm, its intwining pattern delicate but fierce. Her breathing hitched. I watch as she opens her eyes.
Her eyes are the brightest I've seen. The pale blue of her seraphim melted into a ocean blue, still glowing. Little symbols dancing around her iris, shimmering as she blinked. These would fade after a couple of days, and her eyes would go back to their pale blue. She hair felt softer as I ran my fingers over it. Her blonde streaks as smooth as silk.
'You ok?' I asked, smiling slightly at her, while brushing her hair from her face. She nodded.
'What's the new power?' I asked, curious to see if she was like the old generations of seraphim, who had
to figure it out themselves. She lifted up her hand to test it, then suddenly there was a rock there. She smiled, then pushed her hand away from her, so the rock was released and went flying into a neighbouring buildings window. Telekinesis. Not bad. Not a common gift. This is only the second of her gifts though. She will get 5. No one who we have seen has ever got to 5 and lived though. They get more and more deadly as they progress.
Soon, Clara won't be able to help but hurt someone. I won't let that happen. I won't let her be the monster she's meant to be.
