I am Death. Well, Death's son, anyways. I'm training to become the new grim reaper in a world called Remnant. My dad, the current reaper, is supposed to take me out to see the world today. So far, we've been living is a castle in a dark dimension filled with the shadows of the damned. My name is (Y/N) (L/N). I look like an ordinary human, but when my Dad's time is up, I'll look like him, a skeleton in black robes.
Today is finally the big day. I put on my training robes, grab my Dad's scythe and hand it to him, and he asks me, "Ready?" To which I quickly respond with a nod of my head.He grabs my hand, and I close my eyes. Soon, I can feel my body tearing apart, before re-materializing back to normal. I open my eyes, and we appear to be in a hospital room in the world of Remnant. My father walks over to the hospital bed. A family is around the girl in the bed. She has a white hospital gown on, and silver eyes. Her hair is red. Around the bed are some crying people, one of them a girl with similar eyes and hair color but wearing a black and red dress with a red hood. The other girl is taller, with golden, messy hair. There's also some other people that don't stand out to me as much as the two girls. A man is holding the girl in the hospital beds hand. He is on his knee, crying. "Please, Summer. Please wake up..." My father walks past him. As usual, mortals cannot see us when we don't let them. My father drags his finger across his chest, making the symbol of (INSERT YOUR RELIGIOUS SYMBOL HERE), before he reaches his finger down to the unconscious girl's head. "Wait." I say, and my dad stops and turns to face me. I continue, "I know it's our job, but... It just feels wrong." My father says in his deep voice. "Her time is up. It is a crime to keep her waiting." I try to understand, but I cannot. But I also do not resist, and muster all my strength to nod in pretend agreement. He returns to face the girl, and touches her forehead with his pointer finger. A few seconds later, and the hospital heart monitor makes a beeping flatline noise. Every other person in the room gasps and the girls start crying. The man, who I'm assuming is the husband of the girl, looks down to the ground. The girl with yellow hair puts her arm of the shoulder of the crying girl with red hair, and they hug each other. "Shhh, it's okay, Ruby..." The girl with yellow hair says to who I'm assuming is Ruby. My father walks past me, and says "Let's go. We have more to do." I grab his boney hand and walk with him out through the hospital door (literally moving through the door like ghosts).
The crying of the people in that room for their loss still haunts my dreams. I haven't seen another death ever since, even though it's been 2 years, and my father is expected to retire soon. I often visit the mortal world, but I never met the same people again. Of course, I have to travel with my dad, because he's the only person who can travel between the mortal realm and the underworld. But I still wonder about Ruby. How is she doing now? I know I can't grow too attached to the humans, but I can't help but feel bad for her. Whoever was lost that day must have been very important to her. Now, I am in the middle of a forest. My dad tells me to stay close, because there are grimm in this forest and, unlike humans, they can still see and attack us. But eventually, I hear a gunshot nearby. I look towards the direction of the fire, but didn't see anything. I return to continue walking with my father, but he isn't there. I gasp, panicked. Where did he go?
I wander the forest for what feels like hours, and there's still no sign of him. I grow worried, and shout, "Dad! Where are you?!" Suddenly, I hear a growling noise from behind me. I turn to see a bear-like grimm pounce at me. I ran the other direction, hoping to outrun it, but I trip on a tree root that had grown out of the ground. My ankle hurts really bad, and the grimm is now on top of me. I cover my face, preparing for death. But it never comes, and I hear another gunshot. I look up to see the bear go flying into a nearby tree. I quickly stand up to see my savior, and see the face of a human woman. "Are you okay?" She asked. She had golden blonde hair, and looked awfully familiar. "I-I'm fine..." I say, still a little shaken. I try to walk towards her, but my ankle forces me to limp a little. She puts her arm around my shoulder, "Easy, tiger. You probably broke it." She said in an upbeat voice. She helps me stand up, and walks me into a small nearby cabin in the woods. We enter the cabin and soon I am in the living room, sitting on the couch, my injured leg up on the coffee table near the fireplace. "I'll go get the first aid kit, you stay here." She said. "Wait, who're you again?" I ask, assuming she might be the one who haunts my dreams. "Yang, you?" I sigh in relief. "Y/N." She nods, and continues into another room. I look down at the fireplace. It feels very warm and relaxing. The cabin looks very fancy, almost like it was owned by royalty. Yang soon comes back with the first-aid kit and an ice pack. There's also someone else with her. I look up to see who it is, and I almost gasp in surprise. "Yang, who is he?" Says the cute, childish voice of the one I know to be Ruby. She looks now exactly like she did 2 years ago. Yang replies, "He is Y/N." She then crouches down beside me, and straps the ice pack to my ankle. The coldness stings a lot, and she says, "Looks like you broke it. Don't worry, you can stay here as long as you need. I'm sure my sis won't mind. Right?" Ruby nods behind me. I can't help but feel this is karma for when I stood by and let what happened to her loved one as I let happen to mortals everywhere. "Oh, we should check and make sure Weiss is okay with him staying here. Being her place and all." Yang says after she finished strapping the ice pack. I don't want to stay here now that I know Ruby was here, "I can go. It's fine." I say, trying to stand up and walk, but only to fall down back onto the couch. "Easy." Ruby says, helping me get back down safely. I quickly grow embarrassed and say, "Sorry Ruby." To this, Ruby and Yang grow surprised. I then realized my mistake. "Um, how did you-" Ruby is then quickly interrupted by a shout, "RUUUUUBY! WHY IS THERE MUD ON MY CARPET?!" "here comes the ice queen..." Yang says, abruptly ending the questioning of how I knew Ruby's name. A girl in a white dress, reminding me of a winter day, stomps into the room. "Weiss, it wasn't me!" Ruby says, pointing at me. At this, the girl who was introduced as Weiss grows even more upset. "Who is he, and why is he here?" Yang replied, "He hurt his ankle while running from a grimm. He needs to stay here until he recovers." Weiss sighed, "Okay, but please tell him to wipe his feet before walking in here and..." She sees my foot up on the table, "WHY IS YOUR MUDDY SHOE ON THE TABLE?! WERE YOU RAISED IN A BARN???" "Weiss, calm down!" Ruby says, trying to defend me. Weiss scoffs and stomps out of the room. "Sorry about that. This is her cabin, and she can be a little..." Yang says, and Ruby finishes her sentence with, "Moody. But she is very nice once you get to know her." At this point, I just wanted to leave. But then I yawned, and Ruby said, "You should probably go to bed, you must've had a long day." I nod, and grab the couch arm for support as I try to walk again. Yang helps me walk the rest of the way into a bedroom. The room is very colorful, with pink snowflakes decorating the walls. I get into the bed, and Yang says goodnight as she closes the door. I sigh and try to sleep. Clearly I wasn't gonna be leaving here anytime soon...
