I wake up panting. I'm on some kind of lift, moving up. I don't understand anything, where am I? Who am I? What is this? The panicking makes me lose my consiousness as I black out.
-
I flutter my eyes open and squint at the brightness. I rub my eyes tiredly. Adjusting to the brightness I notice the many unfamiliar faces looking down at me. "Take a picture, it'll last longer." I make a snarky comment, surprised myself that I said something like that.
I hear laughing erupt from the multiple boys who have been staring at me. Someone opened the cage doors and jumped down to give me a hand. "The f*ck is this place?" I grab the boy's hand and get on the grass.
"None of us know. We were all just kind of transported here with the lift. We don't really question it anymore." Another boy says. I let go of the boys' hand who helped me up and wipe my hand on my pants. "Greenie, do you remember your name?" the other boy asks, "it's the one thing we're all gifted with and what we haven't forgotten. It's alright if you don't remember. It'll come to you."
"Even if I did, why would I tell you? I don't even know you." I scoff and look at the scenery.
"Greenie, don't be so rude, we should all get along."
"Yeah, yeah, okay. My name isn't Greenie. Actually, if my parents hated me then it probably is!" I burst out laughing and hit my thigh. A few chuckles escape from the others.
"Right..." The boy mumbles.
-
"Who are they?" I ask Chuck, the boy who's been helping me figure things out. I point to the people running inside from the opened stone door wall thingys.
"Those are the runners." Chuck says. He explains it more throughly.
"Can I become a runner?" I look over at Chuck.
"No. Most likely not atleast. We aren't allowed to leave."
"Ah, I see." I nod my head in understanding.
"Hey Chuck, new Greenie I see." A male says. I saw him run from the stone doors. He must be a runner. "And she's a girl."
"Why does everyone call me a Greenie? I'm sure my parents didn't hate me that much." I pout at the comment made.
The runner chuckles and flashes me a smile before leaving. "That's Minho. He's a runner." Chuck explains.
"Yeah. He seems nice." I smile, repeating the runners' name in my head multiple times. "Hey, Chuck?" I ask, giggling.
"Yeah?"
"I remembered my name earlier but didn't tell anyone." I shake my head, smiling to myself.
"Why?" Chuck questions, eyebrows furrowing.
"Whoever gave me my name must've hated me. My name's Basil. Yes, the herb." I chuckle out.
"Oh wow, I'm so sorry for you." Chuck cracks up. "It's interesting though." Chuck smiles.
I nod. "Alright, I'll keep my name hidden from most I guess but I'll probably tell someone." I shrug my shoulders and giggle.
"The walls are closing, look." Chuck points. I watch in awe as they close, feeling slighlty trapped but a feeling of safety takes over, remembering what Chuck told me about the monsters inside... The grievers.
-
It's really late now, they sleep in hammocks. It's creative and it scares me. Hammocks scare me. I rest on the hammock that now belongs to me, trying to find a position that is comfortable. I'm getting irritated, feeling like if I sleep on my right side, someone will come up behind me and the other way around. The quietness makes me irritated, like there's a jumpscare around the corner.
I ball my fists up and hit the cloth, trying to express my anger. I relax quite a bit after awhile. I smile, finally able to sleep.
-
I flutter my eyes open, the morning brightness waking me up from my disturbing slumber. I wipe my eyes with my sleeves and then scratch my arms, feeling the sudden urge to. My eyebrows furrow upon feeling strange but I ignore it.
I stand up and look around. I see the runners start going in the maze. That maze interests me, I wonder what the grievers look like. They must have something to do with getting out of this place. I'm sure of it.
"Greenie, what you lookin' at? Get to work." Newt chuckles.
"I have a name, you know?" I bite my lip, furious over the name 'Greenie'. It's getting annoying.
"You remember your name?" Newt asks, a smile forming on his lips.
"Yeah, I just didn't tell anyone. Chuck's the only one who knows." I walk with Newt, going to the work I've been given.
"So, will you tell me or will I have to ask Chuck?" He smiles cockily.
"As long as you don't tell anyone, my name is Basil. Yes, like the herb." I smile tightly. Newt is trying so hard not to laugh but it still bursts out.
"Wow, alright, I'll keep your secret, your name is pretty embarrasing."
I laugh along and continue with the day.
-
"Where's the Greenie?" I hear someone ask, checking me back into this reality. I fix myself a little, trying to forget the confusion I just experienced.
"I don't-"
"The Greenie you're looking for is here." I make an entrance, cutting of the person who was talking.
"Why aren't you doing your job?" Gally asks.
"Well excuse me, taking a piss is harder for people who can't just whip it out and pee anywhere they want." I roll my eyes.
"Watch your attitude, Greenie." Gally gives me a stare.
"Your eyebrows make me want to throw up." I suddenly blurt out. The others are trying to hold in laughter.
"Your attitude makes me want to punch you!" Gallys eyes pierce into mine.
I chuckle and stomp off. Gally shouts after me but I make a run for it, speeding to hide somewhere. I spot Newt and wave to him. He looks at me weirdly.
"Why were you running?" He asks. I heave out a sigh.
"I was running from Gally, he irritated me and I didn't want to start a fight."
"With that speed you could become a runner." He chuckles, continuing his activities.
"Hope so, the job I have now sucks." I say, helping Newt finish his daily activities.
"You'd have to talk with Alby if you have that on your mind. Don't know about you becoming a runner though, it's a hard and scary job from what I've heard." Newt answers, finally finishing.
I notice how dark it's getting. "When will the runners come back?" I ask.
"They should be coming soon." Newt responds, looking at the gate.
After some time of looking at the gate, I spot figures coming out. My tense body relaxes again. "Hey Newt, hello girlie!" Minho passes by.
"Hi Minho!" I smile wide, waving at the boy as he goes. When he's out of sight I turn to Newt. "He's friendly. I'm glad he doesn't call me that stupid nickname everyone else has given me."
"Yeah," Newt agrees, "but would you rather everyone know your real name and bully you from there?"
"That's why I haven't told my name to everyone excluding you and Chuck. If it's my real name I'll actually react to it and take it more seriously. Maybe I should come up with a fake name."
"That could work."
