I pushed at the huge door which served as entry to the apartment building in which I lived before slowly walking up the few flights of stairs towards our apartment. I turned the knob to find it was unlocked. I pushed the door, careful not to make any noise as it was way past midnight at this point. The apartment was dark and completely silent. A flashing light shone from the living room and I followed it curiously, the TV was still on but no sound came from it. My mom's lifeless figure laid on the couch fast asleep. Walking towards her, I noticed the dried up tears on her cheek and she occasionally whimpered as if crying in her sleep.
I walked over to the storage closet which stood just a few feet away from the living room and grabbed a blanket. I walked back over to the couch and draped the blanket over her before leaning down and brushing her face gently with the back of my hand. "Goodnight mom," I said quietly, turning off the TV, before heading to Lily's room.
Lily's pink room was dimly lit by a ladybug nightlight. I was surprised to see stirring under the blankets as I walked closer to her. "Lily? Are you awake?" I said, keeping my voice soft and low, in an effort to not startle her.
"Mia, you're home," she said quickly as she jumped up and draped her hands around my neck. I grabbed her tiny body and hugged her as tight as I could. "I thought you had left me too," she said simply after some time, looking straight into my eyes. Her eyes lacked the excited spark they always had.
"I'm so sorry Lily. I promise I will never leave you again ok?" I said, kissing her forehead.
"Is it okay if I sleep with you tonight? I know I'm supposed to be brave but I'm scared Mia."
My heart broke at her words. How could this be life? How was it fair that this sweet, innocent little girl would have to grow up without a father? "Come on, let's go to my room," I said to her before lifting her up and heading up the stairs towards my room.
I placed her gently on my bed before changing into my pajamas and getting into bed. I pulled the blankets over us and said goodnight to Lily.
As exhausted as I was, I couldn't fall asleep. I couldn't understand how it was possible that the most important man in my life was dead, never to see a grandchild like he spoke of or watch me graduate or Lily grow up, like he spoke of on so many occasions. It was only then that I realized I had no idea how my dad had died.
After awhile of pondering, Jessica managed to sneak into my thoughts. Who was she really? I thought to myself. Why was she so nice to me? It was probably just pity, I thought to myself. And why did that random girl on the street call her Jessie?
So many questions clouded my mind that night. I don't know when I fell asleep but I sure was glad I did eventually, stifling my thoughts any further.
Jessie's POV
"Where the heck were you?! I was worried. You said you would've been gone for 20 minutes and you were gone over an hour and you didn't answer your phone. What the hell Jess?"Oh no, I thought as I looked up at a frantic Holly, standing infront of me waving her hand all over the place as she spoke, anger dominating her voice.
"Holly, I'm so sorry, I wasn't thinking. Something happened tonight." I took a seat on the couch and Holly mimicked my action, sitting next to me.
"What's wrong Jess?" She said, her voice softening to a small whisper. I looked up at her, her eyes anxiously awaiting my response.
"Nothing's wrong. It's just...do you remember I told you about that girl that almost knocked my lungs right out of my chest today? While I was walking to Starbucks, I saw her in the park, freezing her ass off an-"
