"Are you okay?"

"Oh, yeah, I'm fine."

He straightened up, staring at the younger boy in front of him. He slid his glasses back on, clearing his teary eyes.

The younger boy only tilted his head in confusion. "You don't seem fine. Those other boys seemed really mean."

"Oh, um, no, we're friends. They were just-" he paused, sniffling, "they were just j-joking around." They liked to joke around with Matt a lot. Sometimes it made him upset, but he knew they were always joking because they were his friends.

"Oh. Okay then." The younger boy didn't seem fully convinced. "Well, I'm Jimmy. What's your name?"

He stared at Jimmy for a moment. "Matt." He finally spoke, nervously folding his hands in his lap. "Aren't you the kid who hangs with the witch?" Matt asked, tilting his head slightly.

"Witch?"

"Yeah, y'know, the witch girl."

"You mean Holly?"

"Yeah, her."

"She's not a witch, silly!" Jimmy chuckled. 

"That's what everyone calls her though," Matt asked, clearly confused. Everyone Matt had talked to called her a witch, 'cause she liked to play in the woods not far from school.

"Well, she's not. Witches are mean and Holly is really nice." Jimmy seemed to be really protective of his friend. Matt wished his friends were that protective of him.

"Oh, um, 'm sorry." Matt stood up. "Well, when you see her, tell her that she's not alone in being called names." Matt frowned and looked towards his friends.

"Your friends call you names?" Jimmy seemed worried. Matt didn't like when people were worried about him.

"Yeah. I thought all friends gave eachother nicknames."

Jimmy only frowned. "That doesn't sound very nice."

"Oh." Matt stared down at the gravel pavement.

"Do you wanna play with me an' my friends?"

Matt was confused. Nobody ever wanted to play with him. He usually just followed his friends around and did what they wanted to do.

"Uh, sure."
