He keeps an eye out for Sherlock the entire day.He doesn't know exactly why, and later, he'll realize he doesn't know what he'd say when they meet for the second time, either.
He just knows it's important that he finds him.
John almost doesn't find him, but he does, and he wonders why everyone else can't see him, too.
He is in a seat at an empty table, and everyone seems to be purposefully walking around him, without noticing it. Ignoring him by mistake. Like he's invisible.
His skin is a translucent shade of paleness, his hair a shocking contrast as it falls in inky curls on his forehead. Since Sherlock is sitting now, John wont notice it yet until later, much later, that Sherlock is tall. So tall, with a slenderness that makes him seem even taller.
Last night, John didn't get the chance to get a good look at Sherlock out there in the dark, but now, he can see him, in the light, and he isn't invisible. He is breathtaking.
John looks at Sherlock from the front of the canteen, where he has froze while holding his lunch tray. Should he go over there? His presence may not be welcome, after all, just because of their one meeting doesn't mean that their friends.
John drums his fingers on the bottom of his tray.
But, what if Sherlock wants him to talk to him?
John licks his upper lip.
Sherlock looks around. He seems to be waiting for someone. He already has plans.
Right. John leaves it at that. He goes to find a seat somewhere else.
***
People act strange around John, and some of them talk loudly, like he cannot understand what their saying. For gods sake, don't they see he speaks English?
Once, after he first arrived, John asked if anyone knew where he could get some French fries.
Nobody really talks to him much, now.
***
John feels the day go by in slow motion.
He feels like he is waiting for something that will not come.***
"Stupid American," they say right in front of him, as though he doesn't understand. "Stupid American."
***
John is sitting on his bed. There is an open dictionary in front of him.
