Chapter 2 - Not Fearing Death

The Witch was dragged along the path leading to the throne, passing by the court ministers most concerningly inched away. As if the Witch were a frightful monster.

Emperor Ares noticed the slight shifting 'such nonsensical spineless things'.

The clanking sound the chains finally ceased, as the Witch was finally brought before him just close enough so he could study each of the Witches features thoroughly. The Witches bright pink eyes stared straight into his. It was a definite fact, this Witch's appearances was extraordinary so much that it was almost too hard to believe the Witch was a man, even the dirt smeared on his face wasn't enough to obscure his stunning features.

But if looks were a factor which influenced his decisions then perhaps many lives would have been spared, be it, man or women.

Ares was slightly taken aback, it had certainly been a long where someone was able to actually lift their heads up in his presence much less look right into his eyes. Yet the person didn't even falter.

As a matter of fact, for someone who's going to be executed was actually this calm, no, not calm but indifferent he's ever seen, someone. He was extremely intrigued at what sort of mindset the Witch had and wondered if he could break it.

In response to the Witch's indifference, he released his raw killing intent towards the Witch; he wanted to see the Witch tremble before him in fear. He was soon left in disappointment as the Witch silently treated him to a long-lasting stare off, completely unaffected by raw and inhibited malic presented.

Ares knew it wasn't his bloodlust in question as three of the five knights holding the chains lost grip of the chains holding the Witch and dropped down in completely in fear. Even the ministers fell to their knees.

Ares realised he went too far this time and withdrew his bloodlust immediately. Now he was further incited since it had been such a long time.

He stepped down from his throne "It seems you don't fear death" he spoke directly to the Witch. 'Having such steeled nerves this Witch must be extremely powerful'. He also found it strange, that the Witch was chained similarly to that of a beast despite his visible small stature.

'Perhaps the Witch already attempted to escape, explaining the captain of the Saint knights' previous strange disposition' Ares assumed.

As a matter of fact, in reality, both assumptions were actually very far from the truth, and the Emperor couldn't have been any more incorrect.

Instead of fearless, you could call the Witch clueless, like that of a baby chick unable to comprehend danger when staring right into its face.

However, Ares's misunderstanding only further riled himself up. 'it had been too long since he has seen a worthy opponent'.

"You" Ares pointed to one of the knights who'd managed to remain standing. When confronted the knight immediately kneeled "your majesty" he said in response.

"Unchain the Witch and give me your sword" he spoke determinedly.

"Your majesty?" although the knight had his reservations, but he smartly responded accordingly and did as his majesty said.

The ministers and dukes wanted to scream out against his Majesty's decision, however looking at 'the example' their voices were stuck in their throats. There was no way they could speak unless they wanted to end up like that pitiful young boy on the floor.

Some of the subjects knew exactly what their Emperor wanted to do and wasn't too worried and others remained witless, only able to silently watch to see what would happen next.

"Witch you are permitted to choose any weapon you take a liking to, in exchange, you shall battle me. If you prevail I shall free you and abolish any record of criminal charges, furthermore, I'll allow you to make the first move," Ares declared one-sidedly.

Ares is absolutely positive that the deal was more than fair and would be extremely tempting to anyone in the witch's position, he made it so the Witch wouldn't refuse.

Normally no one sane would actually dare to even think about lifting a sword against their monarch but backed into a corner where both choices meant death. He gave the Witch a way out; a lifeline.

So, at the slightest chance of hope, anyone would desperately choose the lifeline rather than pointlessly die a dog's death.

The Witch didn't speak, so his silence was taken as an agreement since there was no disagreement.

The last cuff from the Witch's neck was finally undone and crashed onto the floor creating a dramatic echo throughout the silent hall. The Emperor's subjects made room enough so they wouldn't get caught up in the battle, they waited in anxiety.

And could only internally curse at his majesties recklessness, although he was through and through a tyrant, the truth is that he is effective. Thanks to him the kingdom literally flourished as soon as he took charge it.

He would rightfully award those worthy and he treats everyone equally without unfair treatment which was satisfactory enough for most.

From certain examples made no one tried to take advantage.

Those who were useless nobles somehow related to the previous Ruler he would have gotten rid of and replaced with someone more suitable for the position. The only downside to the current Emperor's methods was his dangerously bloodthirsty nature and his tendency to become unreasonable, such as right now.

It seems that this book is quite liked, so I'll try to keep the chapters consistent as I already have the plot and stuff figured out.
