Xenelle's POV;

 Today was seriously different;

No 1- Quam was acting really, really weird, even more than usual. When your best friend wakes up cursing you, then actually apologizes for it, then rushes into the bathroom and takes ages to get ready, and comes out just with her face washed; something's definitely wrong.

No 2- Then comes the famous hooded figure.

 I didn't make that big a deal of it, but glancing at Quam, I realized that she most definitely did. Her otherwise blithesome self looked visibly shaken and startled to the core; it was as if her worst nightmare was coming true. Her bloodshot eyes couldn't get any more red, and all the colour was drained out of her face, making her look like an albino. Sweat beads were pouring out of her head like rain. What was the matter with her?

 "WHAT. THE. HELL. WAS. THAT." That was all I managed to say.

 She did not answer me. She always manages to have some dirty comeback to any normal thing I say. But not this time. Not uttering a single syllable, but just an inhuman growl, she ran after it.

"Yeah, thanks for confiding everything in me!", I'm pretty sure she didn't hear me. Sighing, I took off after her.

 I had never done so much exercise as I had done that day. We ran some ten blocks as the hooded thing glided. Wait, glided? Before I could comprehend the thought any further, it suddenly merged into thin air. Quam stopped dead in her feet, and clumsy as I was, I crashed into her. Jeez, I had to know what was going on.

 We groaned; brushing ourselves, we got up. If she didn't tell me, I would strangle her right there and then!

 "It's about time you start telling me whats going on in your fuzzy little head!"

 "What?" Clearly, she was still dazed from our latest encounter.

 "Go on, spill the beans; you clearly know what's going on. I saw your face when you noticed the shadow."

 I thought she would answer me with her regular sarcastic, dirty comments like, 'Thats for me to know, and you to... suck it up!' But I was obviously mistaken. Her eyes had lost that faraway and dreamy look that was always there. She had this rabidly focused look, like she had when that girl, Dormi had hit her in sixth grade. Quam had then broken a jaw, fractured her ribs and basically pulled out her teeth, like an animal. That was one gory yet, deserving makeover that Dormi had undergone that made her the laughing stock for the rest of her miserable school life. Right now, I was scared for a split second, both for and of her.

She shook her head, as if to clear it, and looked at me sheepishly.

 "I guess I have a lot of explaining to do, eh?"

 "Lets go to school, shall we? We're already late, all thanks to your little escapade."

 For a sliver of a second, I thought she felt, looked guilty. But she smirked and then put on a poker face. There, now we had the normally weird Quam back! Walking back to her home, she was not speaking a word. Well, fine with me, I did not mind the little silence to clear up the clutter in my mind. We rode on our cycles and entered the prison that was our school, Zavta High.

 Zavta High is the only high school in our city, Zavta. As typical as it sounds, we were given human history as a compulsory subject. Although the subject fascinated me, Quam hated it. She kept cribbing that we should forget about the past, and move on. As true as it was, I believed that the past could teach us several values that would otherwise be lost in the sand, that we could learn not only from our mistakes but from those of others too.
