Xenelle's POV:
101, 102, 103, 104... Why couldn't I sleep? What was wrong? I never had difficulties in sleeping-it was my specialty. But why not now? I turned to the other side of the bed and saw the time. 5:23 am. Near to the school time, but not close enough. I still had two hours the kill. After being woken up in the middle of the night for no apparent reason, I couldn't sleep a blink. Well, no day soon I would be talking to 'sleep" again!
I dragged myself out of bed and grabbed a pair of sweats, heading towards the bathroom. You might ask why? My brilliant Idea was to take a walk in the forest close to my house. It was a small one, without much wildlife. It had always been a relaxing thing for me; and after yesterday, I clearly needed a big fat extra-large dose of requiescence.
As I stepped out of the house, the cold morning air hit my face. I could see my breath coming in puffy white clouds of mist. Taking a deep breath, I started jogging towards the forest. The streets were dead silent, not a single soul on the road. The streetlamps were dim, giving out a ghastly yellow light. The sky was still dark.
The forest itself was eerie. Every tread of my sneakers could be heard and the piercing cries of the cicada engulfed the forest. People rarely came here-they were too scared of the superstitions attached to it. It was believed that the forest was a 'source of power', what so ever that meant. But that was only the older generation; none of the youngsters believed in it. They often came here with bottles of alcohol to get wasted, and ended up scaring themselves. The reason I came in here was to walk. I loved to walk. It's like you create your own little world with complete privacy, not giving a damn about what others thought. People always think I prefer to walk cause I wanna lose weight but that's not true! I am perfectly fit, mind you!
The forest looked uncanny and sinister. Trees were occupying most of the walking space, with the creepers in a mushy mess around the tree trunks. Roots hung from the branches of thick trees, giving the forest a 'Tarzan' look. It was crepuscular; on the whole, really freaky. I often came here, but always felt as if something was missing, something I couldn't put my finger upon.
But today, I felt different. The lost faraway feeling went to the drains, and was replaced by a feeling of... belonging. The forest felt more alive than ever. People believe that plants breathe, even if we can't see it; but at this time I could FEEL the plants and the trees breathing and living. It was as if God had turned on a switch and every green producer was breathing just for me. Everything was clearer and brighter-I could literally feel the energy, the power coming from the plants into my body. Wait.... Did I just say Power?? Ugh!! What was wrong?! I needed to stop thinking and concentrating so hard.
I started running along a small track marked in the mud. It was pretty short; you could jog through in 15 minutes. So that's what I did. Without thinking of anything, I jogged my heart out. Sounds funny? Deal with it.
After completing my marathon, I decided to head home and get ready for school. Today was going to be a special day and important too. Lucas was going to tell me something important about the mess going on in our lives, and I hoped to have some satisfactory answers for the endless question in my mind.
