"Woah," The three of us stared up at the mass of marble that floated above us."I think 'Woah' is right," Jenny whispered, her voice hoarse from talking the whole drive over.
"You'll catch flies if you don't close your mouth," Claire commented.
"How are you not in awe?" Jenny gasped as she turned, her mouth still hanging open.
"I've been here before," She told us with a nonchalant shrug. "My parents are alumni and wanted me to go here but I never passed the exams,"
"Good," Jenny snorted, "That meant you got to meet my amazingness,"
"You mean idioticness?"
"Shut up Belle,"
"Love you too Jen," Suddenly she dove at me, a teasing grin stretched across her face. We fell to the ground as her fingers dug into my side. I let out a screech as the tall girl overtook me with tickling.
"Uh, guys?" Claire's voice rang out from above us. "You might want to get up." In a matter of seconds, we had scrambled to our feet, brushing the grass off our skirts. As our gazes turned to the floating mass, we saw that a glass staircase had materialized in the absence of our attention. The golden rails stretched to from our feet to the edge of the land mass where the school sat. A tall man in glittering silver robes glided down towards us, his long, black hair fluttering in the wind. A small elf lingered a few paces behind him, tripping over the stairs as it attempted to keep up with its master.
"Welcome, Isabella-"
"I prefer Belle,"
"Isabella, I hope you will make a nice addition to our ranks-"
"Sounds like they're the military, not a school," Jenny huffed under her breath. Claire attempted to muffle her giggle behind her hands as the man gave the two a glare.
"Jennifer, Clarisse, you may leave. We do not permit visitors inside the grounds," The man continued to glare at them, waving an impatient hand to the small car that had brought us from the airport to our current location. My friends stood tall, attempting to hide their fear of the man's icy blue eyes. After a few moments, they sigh and gave my hands a light squeeze before walking away. The man watched the car drive, waiting until it had disappeared from sight before turning to me.
"Follow me," His robes whisked around as I jumped away to avoid being hit. I followed him dutifully, careful not to trip over the brown-clad creature scampering at his feet. "Now as you begin your education at our academy, you will be assigned a dorm where you will stay. There are three dorm halls, Floug Hall, Genare Hall, and Trang Hall. They are not specific to the year you are in but commonly year ones will room with year ones, year twos will room with year twos and so on,"
"How will it work since I am a newcomer after many in my year have been here already?"
"Many students transfer throughout the year. You will find that year seven is significantly larger than year one. Typically class sizes double as they move up due to other schools discovering more gifted students. Some schools, such as your former, commonly do not allow the transfer of students with very few exceptions. We have also had students expelled previously so you should pay good attention to your grades. Your previous grade manipulation will not make you seem weak, it will get you kicked out. You must do well to remember that, Isabella,"
"Sir?" We were approaching the dorm hall that seemed to be the farthest back on the island. The man left no response as I looked over, still trying to maintain an equal pace to his tall stature. "How did you know my friends' names?"
"Some wizards are more gifted than most due to hard work. What is important is that you will refer to me as Professor Karr. You are in room three hundred and forty-two. You will find your class schedule, room key, and belongings waiting for you in your room. If you have any questions I am sure your roommate will be plenty willing to answer them and lead you around campus until you know your way," and then, without another word, he stalked off, his robes whipping behind him, and his elf following behind as he gave me a small bow.
Once Professor Karr had disappeared from sight, I sighed and turned towards the building I stood in front of. Large, glass double doors sat in the center of the building. With smooth, marble walls, the building towered several floors up, gold-lined windows surrounding every story. All three of the dorm halls sat near each other, identical golden windows and glass doors layering the walls. Right above the door in shimmering, golden, cursive writing was Genare Hall. As I gently tried to push open the glass, I found that it wouldn't budge. Sitting right before my eyes were golden handles. I tried to push on pull doors... way to make a great first impression if anyone is watching me. The doors were heavier than I thought, taking most of my strength to pull one open and slip through to the cold air inside the building. The inside of the building was as bright as the outside, smooth birch walls with old photographs lining the walls. The wide room was filled with large, velvet sofas, dotted with golden tables throughout the arrangement.
"Claire would have loved this place," I sighed, making my way to the small, spiral staircase that sat in the middle of the room. Dull, flashing lights emitted from the darkness below the stairs and the same warm environment I was surrounded with here appeared to take its place in the upper levels. Sudden giggling erupted above me as three girls with shorts and long-sleeved shirts came running down the stairs.
"He's gonna catch you if you don't hurry up!" The raven-haired girl squealed as a girl with blonde curls tripped behind her. The three girls all went tumbling down into the darkness. As I stared down the stairwell, more footsteps erupted from above. A taller boy covered in glittering pink tore down the stairs. He stopped and turned to me, soft, brown eyes looking down at me.
"Did you-" He paused to suck in a breath, "Did you see where they went?" I simply looked at him, eyes wide as he stood, panting. "They covered me in paint,"
"I can see that," I laughed, finally moving as I folded over, my face contorted as I tried to keep it in. "They went down,"
"Thanks," He shouted running down into the same darkness that had swallowed the girls. I sucked in a large breath, a smile prominent on my face as I started up the stairs. As I neared the first hall, I walked up to the nearest door to read the number.
"Two-oh-one" The white, flowing numbers sat in the middle of each of the golden doors, evens sitting on the left and odds laying on the right. As I read the next number, I realized that my room must be on the next floor even if the hall did seem much longer than the building appeared from the outside. As I climbed the stairwell up to the next floor, I listened to see if I could hear anyone. The building was strangely silent, not even the girls' squeals to pierce the air. Slowly, I trudged down the hall, watching the numbers on the lefts as they skipped higher and higher. Finally, three forty-two came into sight and I knocked. The sound echoed down the hall as I waited for a reply. As I waited, I realized that my roommate most certainly was not in her room and I would have to wait until she finally arrived. And so, I sat down and waited.
