“A metaphor is a figure of speech, often used in poetry, where a thing is regarded as representative or symbolic of something else.”
Unfocused on the literary terms his English teacher was lecturing about, Dj tapped his pencil against his desk trying to keep himself awake. It was his last class for the day but it felt like an eternity would pass before it ended.
He looked over at the clock hanging above the classroom door. 1:30. One hour and 30 minutes more until this torture would end. After letting out a sigh, Dj felt his eyes slowly beginning to close…
Suddenly, Dj felt a vibration from his pocket.
“Ano na naman? Matutulog na nga ang tao, dinidisturbo mo pa!” he thought to himself, scratching his head in annoyance.
Before slipping his phone out of his pocket, Dj looked towards the front to make sure his teacher wouldn’t catch him. Luckily, Mrs. De Villa had her back to the class, as she obliviously wrote down definitions on the chalk board.
“Ayos, at least hindi na macoconfiscate ‘tong phone ko,” Dj thought to himself once more, with a mischievous grin on his face.
After looking left and right to find his classmates in the surrounding desks knocked out from sheer boredom, Dj slyly pulled out his phone. He kept his hands under his desk to lessen the chances of him getting caught.
A text notification blinked on his phone screen.
Kath B. <3:
Grabeeeee, I’m so bored :(((
Dj rubbed his eyes in disbelief. Could it be?! Another text from Kath?!
He quickly typed in his pass code, then tapped the “Messages” icon. His text conversation with Kath was highlighted, meaning his latest text was from her - THE Kathryn Bernardo!
“Kalma, Dj. Kalma,” he thought to himself, as he heavily inhaled and exhaled a few times. Once he regained his composure, Dj opened their text thread to reply back.
Bakit naman? Send.
After a few seconds, Kath replied back: Halos 18 hours na kami nagtetaping kasi! Antok na lahat ng tao dito! Wala akong makausap huhu.
Dj giggled, as he imagined Kath playfully bugging the sleepy crew members to talk to her.
Hindi ka pa ba inaantok? Matulog ka muna. Sige ka, baka magkaroon ka ng eyebags katulad ng sakin. :P Pangit tignan, pramis! He texted her back.
Pag may eyebags, pangit agad? Kath replied.
Dj was famous around school for his eyebags. They seemed to reside permanently on his face ever since he got a Playstation for his 14th birthday. Always putting off his assignments to the last minute, Dj would usually finish his homework around 2 a.m. Since he’d have to get up 3 hours later, he figured he’d play video games until breakfast and just sleep during his commute to school.
After looking around the classroom to make sure no one was looking, Dj widely opened his eyes and grinned his most awkward smile, subtly taking a selfie. He then sent the picture to Kath with the follow-up text:
O, ang pangit diba? Mukha akong zombie. xD
After a couple of minutes, Kath replied again: Hahaha! Di naman ah… Slight lang! :)) Pero salamat ha, nabuhay ulit ang dugo ko sa kakatawa.
Dj smiled, knowing he made her laugh. How he wish he could’ve heard that adorable giggle of hers in person. You’re welcome po, Madam. O ano, kaya pa magtaping?
Kayang kaya!! Sige, may scene ako ulit sa wakas! T.T.Y.L.! Kath replied.
Dj began to type “Sige, later ulit! Promise yan ha! Ikaw ang nagsabi!” Then he shook his head, after realizing how eager he sounded to talk to her again. Backspace, backspace, backspace. He finally settled on something more casual to end the conversation: Good luck! Ingat mehn! :))
“Hellooo!!! Is anyone actually listening? Who can give me an example of a metaphor?” Mrs. De Villa yelled trying to wake up her half-asleep class. “You at the back! Mr. Padilla. Care to share your thoughts?”
Dj quickly slipped his phone back into his pocket, before anxiously rising from his seat.
“Um, a-a metaphor p-po?” He asked, rattled.
“Yes, a metaphor? Make this good, Mr. Padilla,” said the unamused English teacher, crossing her arms and tapping her foot as she waited for an answer.
“Yung metaphor, parang comparison yan, diba po? Parang…” Dj looked up at the ceiling as he tried to come up with something. “Kathryn Bernardo is a ray of sunshine. Pag nasilayan mo ang mukha niya, your day will be brightened.”
“Whoa, BOOM!” his classmates cheered and clapped in unison.
“So parang pick-up lines yung mga metaphors na yan, Miss?” asked one of the boys sitting near Dj.
Mrs. De Villa shook her head, as she pulled off her eyeglasses and put them on top of her head. “Ay nako, Adrian. Parang ganun na nga, as long as you’re using them to compliment someone or something,” she explained.
“Very good, Mr. Padilla. You may now take your seat.” Dj nodded and sat back down, letting out a sigh of relief.
“I guess I should’ve thanked YOU Kath for being my inspiration. Since nakalusot ako kanina gamit ang metaphor ko tungkol sayo, isusurprise kita mamaya!” Dj happily thought as he planned out his next set visit after class.
