Chapter 7:

Chapter 7, "A 'newer' beginning":

Sonic woke up to his alarm at 6:30 the next morning. He slapped his hand on the snooze button sleepily, only to be annoyed by it again five minutes later. This time, he got up and turned the alarm off. Sonic yawned, still half-asleep, and scratched his back as he ruffled through the dresser drawers in search of clothes. Fifteen minutes later, he was fully dressed and exiting his room.

Sonic hesitated at the door for a moment, then walked over to the dresser on which the small box laid. He opened it, then took the picture out and put it in his wallet. Placing the box inside the drawer securely, he left the room and closed the door behind him. Sonic left the building, checking his room key in temporarily at the lobby. He shiverred as his blue fur met the crisp, late-Autumn air and snow, and he tightened his scarf as he walked to his car and got in.

Sonic drove to a 'Dunk'n Doughnuts' and walked inside quickly, not wanting to wait any longer for his 'Morning Pick-me-up' as he called it. He bought a coffee and took a seat at one of the booths. He sat and sipped his coffee, trying to wake up, when someone caught his eye. Someone in a black sweatjacket and black sweatpants ordered a doughnut, then sat down on the other side of the room.

Sonic couldn't see who it was because the hood of the sweatjacket was pulled over their head, and he couldn't hear the person talk because he was too far away. However, something about him caught Sonic's attention, and he just couldn't put his finger on it.

Sonic finished his coffee and got out of the booth. He was so engrossed on the strange person in the store that he wasn't paying attention to where he was going, and he ended-up bumping into another man. The man spilled his coffee, and it ruined the white suit he was wearing, and the man yelled angrilly, "What the hell man? This a $2,000 suit man!"

Sonic immediately apologized, "I-I'm so sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going and-" "Sorry? SORRY?!?" The man yelled angrily, "That ain't good enough. You gonna be paying for this suit man!" By now, the attention of everyone else in the store was focused on the man and Sonic. Sonic shrugged, "I can't. I don't have $2,000." The man smirked, "Okay then... you just gonna have to pay ANOTHER way..."

The man pulled a gun out of his pocket, but before he could cock it, he felt another gun press against his head. "Drop it, now." A dark voice muttered behind him. The man slowly put his gun on the ground, and raised both his hands.

Sonic noticed that the man who saved him was the man in black sweats who he noticed before. 'Good thing he was here.' Sonic thought to himself. The man in sweats smacked the other man with the butt of his gun so hard that it threw him against the wall. This was very confusing, especially since the man in sweats was three times smaller than the other man.

The man in sweats grunted, then said, "Now get up and apologize to the nice man." The other man, clearly scared and confused now, got up on his knees and apologized to Sonic, then begged the man to not kill him. The man in sweats pointed to the door, and the other man got up and quickly ran out. The others had gathered around the man in sweats and started applauding him as he fitted the gun back in its holster.

"Hey, thank y-" Sonic was interrupted as the man in sweats turned away from Sonic, then stumbled outside, as if to try to get away from him, then started running. This left Sonic confused, but he thought it would be better to find out then wait and wonder, so he ran outside and started chasing after him, yelling for the man to stop as he ran.

"Wait! I just want to thank you!" Sonic yelled as he ran after the man. It did not stop him, however, and Sonic continued to chase him down the block. Suddenly, the man picked up speed and Sonic was forced to run faster. He could run straight up to the man with ease because of his running ability, but there were alot of people around, and Sonic didn't want to attract attention to himself.

The man ducked into an allyway, and Sonic followed. He turned his head to look at Sonic and, not seeing the pothole in front of him, tripped and fell on his face. Sonic stopped a few feet behind him, seeing that the man was hurt, and caught his breath before walking over to him.

"Hey, are you alright? I didn't mean to get you hurt, I just wanted to thank you." Sonic said as he kneeled down beside him. Sonic reached his hand out to lift the man's hood, but he threw his hand out to stop him. "Get away from me!" He growled as Sonic drew his hand back, "I don't want your thanks..."

Sonic stuttered, "I-I'm sorry... I didn't mean to........" Sonic paused for a moment, thinking he had heard that voice before. He reached for the man's hood again, and again, the man stopped him. Sonic suddenly jumped ontop of him as he was getting up, and pinned his arms down with his knees.

Sonic's heart beat rapidly in his chest as he reached down and pulled the hood away, revealing Shadow as the man running from him. Sonic gasped as Shadow glared at him angrilly, "GET OFF OF M- *cough* *cough*... me..." Shadow's glare faded as Sonic got off of him and kneeled down beside him.

Shadow coughed over and over again as Sonic watched, worried and confused. Sonic noticed blood seeping from a spot under Shadow's sweatjacket, and Sonic quickly unzipped it and pulled his shirt up to reveal a gunshot wound. Sonic gasped again, "What happened?" Shadow sighed, "I was shot yesterday, a deal gone bad, but I don't have the money to go to a hospital right now..."

He coughed again, this time with blood seeping from his mouth. Sonic said, "Don't worry Shadow, I'll go get help! Stay right here!" He started to get up, but Shadow grabbed him, "No... stay... please..." Sonic nodded and watched as Shadow shivvered from the cold snow around him.

Sonic quickly pulled his jacket off and put it over Shadow, "Here, this should keep you warm." Sonic said. He looked behind him and saw a woman walking on the sidewalk, "Hey! HELP me out here! PLEASE!" She noticed, and quickly ran over to help.

"What happened to him?" She asked. "He was shot yesterday, but I was chasing him and he fell... It made it worse..." The woman pulled her cellphone out and stood back as she called 911. "It's gonna be okay Shadow... I promise..." Sonic said as tears streaked down his cheeks.

Shadow grinned, "I know it will... now that you're here..." Sonic tried to smile, but he continued to cry, and he buried his head in Shadow's chest while they waited for the ambulance to arrive. Sonic whimpered, "I m-missed you s-so much Shadow..." Shadow placed a hand on Sonic's head and stroked his spikes as he cried with him, "I missed you too..." He was cut short as the ambulance arrived.
