Chapter 8:
Chapter 8, "Shadow's back":
Sonic coughed as he waited for the vending machine to dispense the energy bar he had bought. It was cold and dank in this part of the hospital, and Sonic wondered why Shadow was brought here. It was the morning after he had run into Shadow, and while Sonic was delighted to see him, it broke his heart to see Shadow in such a position.
Apparantly, he was double-crossed during a drug deal, and the culprits had made off with the coke and the money, leaving only a bullet in Shadow's chest. It wasn't fatal, but Shadow lost the money in the deal, so he didn't go to the hospital.
Sonic walked back into Shadow's room, and breathed a sigh of relief as he saw he was still asleep. Normally, the officers here at the hospital would've handcuffed him to the bed, but other than what Shadow told them, there was no evidence of any drugs on or in him. There was nothing to arrest him for.
Sonic gnawed on the energy bar and looked at his watch, 'Damn, i'm getting tired. It's 4:33... Mabey it wouldn't hurt to get some sleep.' He laughed to himself, 'Mabey I shouldn't have bought an energy bar.' He sighed and leaned over the bed to kiss Shadow on the cheek, but as he did, Shadow awoke and pulled Sonic into a deeper, more passionate kiss.
They broke after a moment, and before Sonic could say anything, Shadow spoke up, "I'm fine," he said in a scraggly, tired voice, "Get some sleep. I'll wake you up later." Sonic smiled and nodded, slumped back into the chair without hesitation, and quickly fell asleep.
A few hours later, or a few seconds from Sonic's perspective, Sonic was awoken when someone shook his shoulder lightly. He opened his eyes, expecting to see Shadow, but it was only a nurse; a yellow ferret with glasses that made her eyes look three times bigger.
"Exuse me sir, you're sitting in front of the I.V. system." Sonic sleepily nodded and got up. The ferret pushed her glasses back on her face, "Thank you, i'll be done in a minute." She smiled and went to work replacing the I.V., and within a few minutes, she was done.
She walked out of the room quietly, and Sonic turned his attention to Shadow, who was woken up during the process, "Heya sleepyhead, how are you feeling?" Sonic asked. Shadow shrugged, "Better I guess..." Sonic moved closer to Shadow's bed, and Shadow siezed his arm. He pulled Sonic onto the bed and ontop of him. Shadow smirked, "THAT'S better."
Sonic laughed and wrapped his arms around Shadow while Shadow stroked his quills. For a while, they just layed there, but then Sonic remembered he wanted to ask Shadow something, "Hey Shadow?" He spoke up, "Why did you run from me? I mean, after you saved me." Shadow sighed and remained silent for a moment before answering the question, "After everything that happened before, after everything I did to you.... I wasn't sure you could forgive me. I Couldn't even forgive myself."
Sonic's quills shivvered at his words, and he held back more tears. Not being able to come up with an appropriate response, he instead lifted his head up to meet Shadow's eyes, and leaned in for a kiss. He and Shadow held for a moment, then made the kiss deeper, Sonic blushing all the more. Shadow grunted and slipped his right hand downward a bit...
"Exuse me, Sir? SIR!" The same ferret interrupted Sonic, "Please get off of his bed, you could rupture his wound easily. Also, it isn't allowed..." Sonic jumped off quickly and tried to stop blushing, "Sorry..." She nodded and left the room again, and Sonic turned again to Shadow, giggling slightly. "Pervert." Sonic said as he walked back to the bed. Shadow grinned darkly, "You know you liked it..." Sonic kissed Shadow again and smirked back, "Yeah, I did." Sonic walked back to his chair, however, despite Shadow's protests, and fell asleep again.
Sonic awoke slowly a few hours later. He yawned and looked over to Shadow's bed, only to find him gone. Sonic jumped up and ran to the bed, scared and confused, then turned around to see the window open. "Oh my god! Shadow!" Sonic screamed as he ran to look out the window. He looked to see if Shadow jumped out, but didn't find him. Sonic stepped back, tears welling up, "He.... he left me... again."
Sonic slumped to his knees, and wept quietly. He sat there for a few minutes before standing up shakily, and leaving the hospital. He drove back to the hotel, relishing the thought of being alone right now. "Wait, where's my key?" Sonic said as he searched his pockets. Then it hit him: Shadow took it.
Sonic rushed frantically to his room, using his speed to run up the stairs instead of using the elevator. He stopped at his door, which was slightly ajar. He ran inside to find Shadow standing near an open window, his hand clutching the engraved bands.
Sonic began to speak, but Shadow just held up his hand, "I've had enough of it! Of you, of me," He threw the bands out the window, "And of US!" Shadow screamed. Sonic stared, open mouthed and speechless. Tears ran down his face as he stepped closer. Shadow just grew angrier, "I never loved you! I don't care about you! That's why I left!" He screamed at Sonic, "But you followed me anyway! WHY?!"
Sonic spoke, frightened now, "I-I m-missed you S-shadow..." He stammered out. Shadow shook his head, "Well I didn't! But you don't believe that, do you?" Shadow stepped into the windowsil, "You don't deserve me!" He screamed, before he leaped out the window. "NOOOOOOOO!!!!!" Sonic screamed as he ran to the window after him. It was too late. Sonic heard him hit the ground, hard.
Sonic stopped screaming, and calmy stepped into the windowsil, tears streaming down his face, "I love you..." He said, before he jumped as well. He closed his eyes just before he hit the ground.
