We walked into The District looking like a pack of the reckless kids. Chase had his arm over my shoulder and we led everyone into the loud club. I was feeling everything from excitement to nervousness to fear to exhilaration.
"Relax Lee," Chase cooed into my ear from my side.
"Am I that obvious?" I covered my face with my palms in shame and he instantly pulled them down.
"I know you." He smiled reassuringly at me and I couldn't help but let go of the tension in all my joints. "I won't leave your side tonight."
He made everything sound so romantic like we were cast in The Notebook or we were fictional characters or something.
"I've never gone clubbing." I hung my head in embarrassment but he lifted my chin with his finger gently.
"Ever?" He wasn't making fun of me.
"I feel claustrophobic...so I thought I wouldn't survive here." He looked at me intensely as he thought for a while before breaking into the most gut wrenching smile ever. "What?"
"Come with me." He removed his arm from around my shoulder and went to hold my hand. He pulled me through the crowd and I couldn't help but feel as though I was being followed. We got to the bar area where a guy named Ned from the losing team held all their money and waved it at the busty Oriental waitress to try and get her attention.
"What would you like?" She asked with a pretty smile.
"Fourteen hunters gold keep em coming and a side serving of you." He winked and the guys behind him howled. I rolled my eyes and looked up at Chase who didn't even smile but instead clenched his jaw as if he was bothered. Maybe she was his ex? Thinking about that made my mood snap and I couldn't explain why.
"You can't afford me." She said right before sliding the beers to each of us and causing an even heartier howl to escape the boys.
"I like em feisty." Ned winked at her and she got close to him over the counter making all of us hold our breaths.
"I'm too grown to fool around in campus dorms." Then she winked back at him. Everybody erupted in joy as we watched Ned hang his head dramatically and hand her all the cash.
Chase grabbed our bottles and led me to a booth across the room. Everything was so dark in here apart from the neon lights and I could feel myself understanding why everyone was into this kind of fun. Chase slid in and let me sit at the edge which I was grateful for because I wanted to feel like I wasn't trapped in if I was going to fight off the claustrophobia. He popped the caps off our drinks with his keys and took a swig at his beer.
"You don't drink?" He asked me almost concerned.
"No. I mean I do. I'm just-"
"Fascinated? Enamoured? Distracted?" He smirked at me and I almost told him the sight of his Adams apple made me weak.
"Debating whether this is a good idea or not." I levelled my eyes at him which made him chuckle.
"Its not gonna get you drunk if that's what you're worried about. No offense but you look like a wine girl."
"I am not a wine girl."
"Well have you ever had anything else?"
"No but-"
"Wine girl." He sang as he brought his bottle to those appetising lips.
"I can't have anything else. My grandma hates alcohol and my dad only lets me drink what he gives me under supervision."
"You're 21 Lee. Live a little." He put his bottle down on the table and stared right into my brown eyes. For a second there I forgot how to breathe and I thought this is how I die: in the hands of someone this beautiful, an inch away from devouring him. The air was thick between us and I could see his larynx dance around slower this time. My breath hitched when I realised he was moving closer and his heat enveloped me so entirely it's as if he was merging our two souls into something more lethal. This was love: a string of coincidences that gathered significance and became miracles.
The words were playing over in my mind as if I'd summoned them from the depth of me, although I knew it was something Adichie would say.
Our lips were a milemeter apart and all I could do was breathe in him as if my sanity couldn't take the restraint anymore. If I could move just a little I'd make the most electrifying connection of my life.
"Woah, is this actually happening?" Matt shrieked astoundedly when he appeared out of nowhere. It's as if I jumped out of my seat and now I was standing awkwardly away from the table yet Chase was still where I'd almost kissed him. He looked pissed and hurt I felt like convulsing back into him and easing all that distraught.
"I'm going to the bathroom." I said as I went to play with my hair around a little till I spotted a corridor down the room next to the bar. I didn't look at his face but Matt seemed really surprised. As I walked away I caught a little of their conversation.
"So you were really about to kiss her?" I heard shuffling and I figured he was sliding into the booth.
"Nothing's happening there forget it." Chase said and a little bit of vomit went up my throat before I swallowed it back down. He was right to not make us more than we are but why am I in so much pain? It's as if he's let go of any claims he'd made just ten minutes ago on me and for some reason that put me off and literally made me sick.
I got to the bathroom and luckily there was a short line. A couple exited the shank and I could see the girl pulling her dress down in proud embarrassment. I knew what they'd done in there and for some reason it made me ache for Chase some more. After about five minutes I was in the shank and washing my face at the sink. I closed the tap and looked in the mirror. I'd gotten most of my makeup off but that's alright I was starting to feel nauseous again. What is happening to me?
A week ago I didn't drink beer or go out to clubs and city tops but this boy has brought all this life out of me and I don't know if I can take it. I'm breaking at the seams and he wants to be there but it's so difficult to let him in when I know the gravity of the damage I will cause.
I unlocked the door and went out only to be smashed back first into the nearby wall and trapped in by muscular bugling arms.
