what if.

Like mashed potatoes with too much salt,
And carrot cakes with extra cinnamon

You brought the spice to my life.
The welcome chaos that churned my rough seas
A tsunami, a tidal wave.

Late nights celebrating the midnight hour
Confessions beneath the phone light
Whispered promises and inside jokes

Mostly me spilling my secrets
And you burying yours further within
Like a pirate's loot, treasure never meant to be found

Guessing your play list
Annoying you endless
Abbreviating everything
Plus teasing you merciless

That was my life with you
Or rather without you
Just me
Wanting you.

Because it was one sided
You didn't want me back
Which was okay
Given the circumstance

Mixed signals
Feverish warm hands on my back
Achingly slow smiles and bitten lips
And you with your infuriating eye roll

I was so confused
So angry
Because it was me
Alone and a fool.

Things change and the clock keeps ticking
Time flies
But I'm still stuck
Stuck on the thought of what if.
