Maia's POV

Three years ago a friend and I wandered into a forest. Deep thrashing noises polluted the air, then all of a sudden the guy with the nice smile stabbed us.

I always used to think, why now? Why with James?

What is it like to die?

The world would become a bright lamp, causing your eyes to squint, just forever until it's dark. But you still know you're on earth. As if you were blinded, you could only feel and smell. You feel the grass underneath you, touching your bare arms and your cold face and you still feel the gravity, pulling you downwards from your slowly dying heart, it's like torture. You would want it to kill you as fast as it could, but instead your last second of life decided to make it torture on you. You would think your body wants you to go off easily, but you can still feel the wound in your heart, you could smell the copper infested air seeping in your lungs as the last few breaths, you can taste the blood in your mouth, you can feel it dripping out of your mouth, the warm, almost burn to touch feeling, blood.

Dying isn't fun.

After laying there, for what seemed like eternity, I felt an arm wrap around me.

Police.

Five months later I found out they had James too, after we were released from the hospital. He made a promise that night, "Maia, I promise I won't let anyone hurt you ever again." Along with that came a long, welcoming hug.

A month after his promise, James started to work out. He started doing different things like karate and judo. Though I thought this would be unnecessary, he insisted to help. He became tan, too, as well as new muscles. He stopped being such a geek, stopped making references to video games and nerd movies, but I didn't like it. He changed so much, and he wasn't the guy I knew from kindergarten. James was always the scrawny, pale, freckled, nerd kid with glasses. Now James was a rather strong, tan, everybody's-favourite-kid with glasses. Although, he stopped wearing glasses and now wore contacts. Surprisingly, this disappointed me. I don't really know why either.

Just only two months ago he stopped working out, but he still acted so different. James still only talked to me, only sat by me at lunch, only poked me during class. It was strange. Some could say he didn't after all change, but I know he did.

It wasn't just his apearence, he as well acted strange around me, like he'd never see me again.

Suddenly, my phone starts to ring. I put my City Of Ashes book down on the coffee table and flip my phone up to my ear.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Maia!" James.

"What's up James?" I try to ask casually.

"Can I come over? We need to talk." His cheerfulness vanished from his voice and I said okay.

After we hung up, I stood from the couch not knowing what to do until he got here. I sat back down and did nothing. What could he possibly need?

James's POV

"Okay bye. See you in a couple of minutes."

I hung up the phone and instantly sprinted out of my front door. Nearly tripping I ran down the front steps and was on my way to Maia's. Her house is near the forest, so normally I take the long route, away from the forest, but I needed to get there quickly. I had horrible news.

I ran along the too-familiar forest fumbling on roots and stumps. I dared not to turn my head and look into the forest, as I would be tempted to go inside of it. There was just something about that forest that made me want to run inside of it and just stay there. But I knew better.

Tripping again, on a stump, I readied my arms for the fall, and closed my eyes.

I didn't notice at first but then I realized I wasn't falling anymore, someone had caught me. I opened my eyes. Suddenly I feel a hand on my mouth, and I let go muffled screams.

I try to pry the hands away with my own, but they felt as if glued.

Then all I could see was black.

A/N

Really short, I know. But I plan to make the chapters a bit longer soon...

I'm just getting started so it's not that good.

I do know that.

Anywayyys... I sometimes am too busy to write, so if I don't write right away, surry.
