They had been following the Nomad for almost a week when they lost him completely and decided to head back home. Toth and Skout had gone after the Nomad on a whim and had not thought of bringing anything with them to protect them from the rising storm forming in front of them.
"Common Skout. It's not far to the Oasis."
"But... Toth, it's almost night and I can't see anything in this storm. Please let us stay the night somewhere?"
"And where would we go? There is nothing here!"
"I think there is a village a few minutes south from here!"
Both had to scream to make themselves heard as the storm started to become stronger and wilder by the minute. Toth knew that the little spittoon girl was still quite young, maybe even still a kid and had to be tired by now.
"Lead the way!" She agreed to Scouts suggestion. Toth could see a small smile play over Skouts face as the little red-haired girl nodded.
It didn't take the girl long to find a village and an Inn to stay in. They tied their horses in the stables and walked in. The Inn was almost full and they had to share a room for the night. This didn't bother either one of them at all and they made themselves comfortable and laid in their beds.
Skout had no trouble falling asleep but Toth couldn't get any rest. She kept turning all evening until she decided to get up and drink a glass of water. This action woke Skout up.
"Toth? What are you doing?"
"Sorry I didn't mean to wake you."
"Can't sleep?" She sat up and rubbed her eyes.
"Not really."
"Something bothering you?"
"No, it's nothing."
Toth got back into bed but still couldn't sleep and after a few minutes of tossing and turning she decided to speak up.
"Skout?"
"Yes, Toth?"
"I just noticed, I never learned your real name."
"Yea. I know, but you can keep calling me Skout."
"I would rather call you by name."
"You might have trouble with that."
"Why?" Toth sat up and looked at the little girl on the other side of the room.
"Let's change the subject."Skout smiled.
"Why did you decide to join me back when we met?"
"That's a secret," Skout responded quietly. It was clear by the tone of her voice that she didn't want to talk about it.
Toth was a bit offended by Scouts refusal to tell her anything. She stood up, made her way to the girls' bed and sat down by her feet.
"Tell me."
"No."
"You really want me to make you speak don't you?" Toth threatened. "Please?"This was one of the few occasions she loosened up and was friendly. To her, Scout was more than a friend. Over time she started becoming quite protective of Scout. She was like a daughter to her. She truly cared for her little spittoon girl.
"I'm not telling you." Skouts expression changed slowly into one much more defensive. Toth noticed the change but continued her quest to find out what the Scout was hiding from her. Her interest had been piqued and now there was no stopping her.
"Toth I don't..."
"Skout you can tell me anything. I won't laugh. Promise."
"That's not what I'm worried about..." she hugged her knees and a tear started forming in her left eye.
Toth noticed the change again and knew she made a mistake.
"Skout..." The y'adala stretched her hand out to Scout in hesitation but scout started shaking lightly and backed away from the woman's touch.
"I don't remember anything Toth. I don't know anything." Her voice is shaking and tears start swelling out of her big green eyes.
"What are you talking about?"
Scout slowly raised her head to make eye contact with her leader.
"I don't have any memory of my life before I was found. I don't know my own name!" She whispered in a scared tone. The subject clearly hurting her.
"I-I didn't know... " and with that, the Woman pulled the petit girl into her embrace. She wiped away the tears and rubbed her little girls back, kissing her on the forehead. Like a mother would calm her infant after waking up from a nightmare.
"Do you want to tell me about it?" She asked.
Skout nodded and started her story.
"Two years ago I woke up in the home of an old woman. She had found me lying unconscious half dead in the desert. She took me in and taught me all I know. She was like a grandmother to me and she saw me as the grandchild she never had. After a few months, she grew ill and passed away. I was forced to find a new place to stay. I did odd jobs and some bad things to survive. When I saw you fighting and saw how nice you were to me I decided if I go with you, I might get to travel around and maybe, just maybe find something out about my past. I gave up on that though. I came to enjoy this work and being around you. You are the closest thing I ever had to a mom and I don't want you to start looking at me differently." The girl had started to smile gently during her story.
"You really don't remember anything?"
"No."
"What did the old woman call you, if you don't have a name?"
"She called me girl or you. She never actually gave me a name."
"Would you like to have a name?"
"I like Skout. Skout has become my name, you gave me that name." I can't resist to kiss her on the forehead.
"Then Skout is your Name." She said giving Scout one of her rare smiles.
She stood up and put Skout down on her bed. Then she joined the girl and spend the night laying next to her.
"I'm sorry," Toth whispers as she finally fell asleep. Skout who until now had pretended to sleep opened her tired eyes slowly and whispered with a faint and sad smile:
"Good Night..."
