Skout looked up when she heard two taps behind her. She stopped walking in circles to observe the Nomad sitting by the wall.
The signaled her to come to sit by him. She did as he requested and sat down next to him. He scooted over closer to her and wrapped his cape over her. He knew that it was cold and they had been trapped here for quite a while.
"T-thanks," Skout whispered and pulled it over herself. The two sat in silence for a while until the nomad started drawing on the ground with his finger. The ground had a thin layer of clay spread over it and his drawings were prominent in the little light they had. He drew flowers, veins, a house that Skout recognizes as his old home and a broom. Then he had an idea. He drew a tall stick figure and a short stick figure with big hair. Next, he drew a big question mark and with hopeful eyes, he looked up to meet Skouts eyes. It took her a while to understand that he was trying to communicate.
"You want to know... about Toth?" She asked confused. He shook his head and whipped away from their arms. When he drew them back on he made it so that they were holding hands.
"You want to know about Toth and me?" He nodded exited.
"After my gran died I worked on the street. Toth asked me about some guy she was after when she passed through our village. After I helped her find the criminal I asked if I could join her. She agreed to take me on as her spittoon girl and I have been her right hand ever since." Friend nodded and drew a clock on the ground with another question mark.
"I've been with her for I'd say ... one and a half years." Next, he drew Skout surrounded by two bigger figures.
"Family..." Scout recognized. The nomad nodded. "I don't have one." Question mark. "I say gran, but she was just an old woman who took me in two years ago. She had a lot of books, I think that's where I got my fascination with books from." He nodded but didn't ask any further questions. Now it was Skouts turn to ask.
"How old are you?" Friend drew up another question mark. "You don't know? Hm... So can you do any other magic tricks? Besides bringing inanimate objects to life?" A big cross. "Really?" Nod. "Is it true that you are the last magical being?" Another big cross. "Who else can practice magic?!" Skout got excited, but he just shook his head and held a finger to where his mouth would be. After a grumble Scout asked one last question.
"Do you have any family?" It surprised Skout that he was nodding quite enthusiastically.
"Lucky you." She said now quiet.
In the meantime, the bag still hadn't found Toth. It climbed and walked, slid and jumped on its quest to get help. Toth has gone deep into the cave and it was hard to follow her footprints in the dark. Eventually, the backpack found Toth and ran towards her. She saw the bag and jumped back, getting her ax out.
"So the nomad is here!" She ran towards the bag to destroy it, but the bag jumped out of the way. It started running back to where Scout and friend were stuck, always making sure Toth was following it.
"Come back here!!!" She screamed while running after the bag. Chasing it down.
Suddenly she stopped. The bag noticed and went back for her. She was kneeling on the ground, a torch in her hand. "Skout..." she whispered. "Where is she!?" The woman was now really angry. She was asking the bag, who turned around and now walking, lead her to the crevice where the two had fallen down.
"Skout! Skout?" Toth yelled out.
"We're down here!" A little voice came from below. Toth jumped up and ran to the hole. Skout and the nomad were still sitting on the ground, but now the girl was sitting on top of the nomad, still wrapped in his cape.
"What did that Monster do?!" Toth asked angrily at the sight of the spittoon girl in the wanted criminal's arms.
"Nothing! He saved me when we fell he protected me from the impact." The girl stood up as gently as possible then holding out a hand to the Nomad who gladly took it. She pulled him up and handed him his cape. She whispered a quiet thank you and looked back up.
"We're kinda stuck down here! Could you maybe throw down a rope for us to climb?" She asked her superior. Toth nodded and got out a rope. "But he will have to come with us!"
"I don't think we'll be able to keep him prisoner for long. He's quite the escape artist."
"Then I will make sure he doesn't escape."
During the whole exchange, the nomad had stayed quiet, thinking of any way to escape.
Toth let down a rope after tying it to a rock. Friend kneeled down in front of Skout, who automatically got on his back. He grabbed the rope and started climbing up. When he was close to the edge he took Toth's hand and she pulled him up. Skout climbed down of him and ran into her leaders' arms.
"You're not hurt right?" Toth asked, fear building up in her voice. Skout shook her head. "Good." She turned to face the nomad, but he had disappeared into thin air.
