When Max wakes up, she is determined to make it a good day.
It's a Saturday; Saturday's are usually good days. So she gets up, feeling awake for the first time since she can remember, and goes to shower. When she gets out, Dana is standing there in a tank top and pajama pants, brushing her teeth. Max greets her with a (non forceful) cheerful hello. Dana turned around and said, "Max, just the person that I wanted to see!"
"Yeah? What's up?"
"Juliet, Courtney, Taylor and I are going to the mall to pick up some stuff for the Halloween dance and I wanted to know if you wanted to come."Max frowned. "They're still doing that?" She had assumed with everything happening, what with a former student dead, a teacher behind bars, and another student, and main source of funds for over half the school clubs and activities, including the Vortex club, in a Psych ward that the school would hold off on stuff like that for awhile.
Dana answered her question. She said, "The school said that as long as we don't call it a Vortex club party we would be fine. You don't have to come though, it was just--"
"No I'll come," Max said quickly. "Can Victoria and Kate come with though?" They were kind of like her own, personalized security blankets. Dana smiled and said sure.
"Be ready in like, 45 minutes," she told her. "You're driving with Kate and Victoria, I'm assuming?" Max nodded. "Coolness. See you in 45." Max waved goodbye as she exited the steamy shower room and made her way back to her room.
She had finally managed to get on her shit and do some laundry, so she finally had clean clothes and (Huzzah) clean socks! She slipped into a mahogany coloured cropped hoodie, her same, favourite jeans, and some pizza socks snug tight in vans, murmuring to herself, "I will never take advantage of socks ever again."
After managing to comb out all the knots and tangles from her hair, she made her way across the hall to Kate's dorm, assuming both girls were in there.
Kate was lying on her bed, legs stretched reading a book, and Victoria lay with her head on her lap, typing away on her phone.
"Hey guys," Max greeted. Kate looked up at Max and grinned.
"Hello Max, what's up?"
"Dana invited me to the mall with her, Taylor, Courtney and Juliet. Uh, do you guys wanna come with?" Victoria yawned and stretched and got sat up (Kate pouted).
"Sure, why not? Just let me go change."
Max blinked. "What's wrong with what you're wearing?" Victoria was wearing a white t-shirt, a pair of designer jeans (Max couldn't see the label, but she assumed they were designer, because Victoria wasn't the type to wear jeans that weren't designer) and Nike shoes.Victoria, on the other hand, looked positively scandalized. "Max," she said incredulously. "This is my bum day outfit! I can't go out like this!"
"But you look--"
"Max, no," Victoria said flatly. Kate stifled a giggle. "If it isn't cashmere, you won't catch me in it. Now excuse me while I change." After she left, Kate and Max looked at each other and burst out laughing.
"Oh my god she really hasn't changed," Kate said through tears.
"Remember in elementary school when she literally had a different tiara for every day of the week?" Max shook her head an smiled. Max could not remember a time between Kindergarten up to maybe grade three where Victoria didn't have a tiara on top of her head.
------
Once Victoria finished changing into her signature cashmere coat and skirt, the two made their way to Dana's dorm, then went down to the parking lot where Taylor, Juliet and Courtney were waiting. They all greeted Max with a quick hug and got into their designated cars. Max obviously went with Victoria and Kate, and the others went with Dana so they could discuss party plans further.
From Blackwell, the Arcadia Bay mall was about twenty minutes. Not too far, but long enough for a silent car to get awkward and tense-- for Max at least-- so she was somewhat relieved when Kate turned and asked her if she was planning on going to the Halloween party.
"Probably not," she said. Parties were never Max's scene, with her shyness and all. They were even less so now, considering what had happened the last time she went to one. She shook her head to rid herself of those thoughts. 'Remember Max,' she told herself. 'It's a good day today. You're going to have a good day.' So she tried to ignore the heavy feeling in her chest and said, "I'm probably just gonna drown myself in Snickers and watching movies online."
"I heard that Warren kid is planning on asking you," Victoria said vaguely.
"He should go with Brooke or something. They would have a good time." Max looked out the window and took a deep breath and counted slowly to ten.
It was going to be a good day.
-----
Max hadn't been to the Arcadia Bay mall since she was thirteen. She and Chloe used to go all the time together, when they weren't at the lighthouse or Chloe's house. This was were she met Justin, and he and Chloe tried to teach Max to skate (which resulted on Max falling firmly on her ass, and not being able to sit without wincing for days). Max smiled at the memory. Kate was right, she was getting better.
Victoria pulled up in a parking space, beside Dana's car, and the group of girls all made their way inside the mall.
"We're not going for any childish shit," Juliet told them. "No corny skeletons or spiders or anything like that. We're getting like," she raised her arms. "Big ass Michael Myers dummies and stuff. So straight to Party City we go."
As Juliet walked ahead of the group, Max whispered to Dana, "I forgot how into Halloween she could be." When they were kids, Juliet always threw the biggest Halloween parties and dances. They were talked about until Christmas, and awaited for by March.
Dana smiled and whispered back, "Yeah. It's really kinda cute."
-----
The had an awesome time in Party City. Max hadn't laughed so hard since Chloe was around. The girls would joke around, pulling on the werewolf and Michael Myers masks, and dancing around with the life size dummies. By the time they were done, the girls were giggly and satisfied.
They were on the way to the cars when Max needed to use the washroom.
"Alright, we'll finish putting the stuff away, then we'll all meet up in the food court." Max nodded, handed her stuff over to Kate, then raced the other way to the washrooms.
She was washing her hands when she saw the mop of choppy blue hair. She turned around.
"Chloe..?" she said softly. The girl was dressed just like Chloe, in a black bomber jacket, ripped jeans with suspenders hanging around the side, and combat boots. "Chloe," she repeated, louder this time. She ran up to her and grabbed her by her arm.
"Oh my god, Chloe, I'm so glad to--"
"What the fuck?" the girl said. It was not Chloe. For one thing, the girl had dark brown eyes, where as Chloe's are-- were-- blue. Secondly, the girl seemed younger, around fourteen or fifteen."Oh," Max said looking down. She could feel the tears building up in her eyes. "Sorry, I thought you were... I'm sorry." Max ran out before she could hear the girls response. She raced to the food court and waited for her friends to show up.
She didn't talk the rest of the day, and when she got back to the door she locked herself in her room. Of course that wasn't Chloe. Chloe was gone. Gone because of her.
It was not a good day.
