{Stella Iparis}

"Stella!"

"Ugh...what now?" I muttered. I had stayed up all night to work on a Mother's Day present for Mom.

"Stella Jackie Iparis!" Mom's voice came from downstairs. "Come on! Your going to be late!"

I snapped awake. I could hear footsteps coming up the stairs. Gah! I thought. Gotta hide the surprise! Before my mom reached my room the door bell rang and Mom turned around to answer it. I hid my present under my desk and got ready for school.

When I got downstairs I found her mom opening the door to Jay Anderson. Jay is only walking with me because of this new regulation that says all students walking to school without an adult must have another student walking with them because of strange people kidnapping kids and frankly, he's pretty annoying. He's always wearing some kind of hat and long pants. Always long pants. No one has ever seen him with shorts on. Also he limps.

When Jay saw me he brightened up. "Hey Stella! How are you?" I rolled my eyes.

"Just fine. Now lets go." I say. I grab my old iPod and my ear buds. My mom refuses to buy me a phone. I don't know why she also doesn't let me download any social media apps. This is usually how our conversations about this topic end up: I ask my mom why cant I have a phone. My mom says she's just keeping me safe. I say she's just being overprotective. She says I'll understand someday. I roll me eyes and say sure I will.

As we walk to school I plug in my ear buds and completely ignore Jay. Normally he tries to start a conversation but today he doesn't. He just looks around like we're about to get mugged and sniffs the air like a dog. Finally I couldn't take anymore of watching him so I asked him what he was doing.

"Wha-?" he stammered like he had forgotten I was there. He seemed at a loss for words which was odd because he's always talking. "N-nothing's wrong."

I raised my eyebrow. "I didn't ask if anything was wrong. I asked what you were doing."

"Oh, um, uhh. I thought I smelt cart food." He replied shakily. I might not have been the smartest kid in my class, but I knew Brooklyn. Cart food is usually sold in front of malls or business areas. It's not like Manhattan where cart food is just about everywhere. "Sure" I responded.

We soon returned to the awkward silence. Normally I would be relived and keep on ignoring him, but after what just happened I couldn't ignore him. He seemed tense and paranoid.

But I didn't have time to think about it because we had just arrived at Watson Middle School and even though I didn't know it the worst school day of my eleven-year-old life had just started.
