Lily ran down the street, to the one place she knew she’d be alone at night. The park on the outskirts of town. She always went there when she needed to think. Her journal in her bag, which was slung around her shoulders, Lily ran and ran until she reached the special tree in the middle of the park.
Why was it so special? The big oak tree in the middle of the park was where Lily’s best friend lay, where his grave was.
When she reached the tree, she fell to her knees at the grave of her best friend.
“Why did you have to leave me?” she whispered as tears flooded down her cheeks. “Why did you leave me alone? I need you.”
Wiping her tears, Lily pulled her journal and a pen out of her bag and scooted over to the tree. With her back against the tree, she opened the journal to a blank page and began to write:
Dear Zachary,
I am at your grave right now as I write this. There was trouble at home. Again. Mom and Dad are fighting too much and no one even realizes when Camille needs help, but me. The cancer is getting worse, as is Mom and Dad’s fighting. I know that they are divorcing, and even though it kills me to know it, I wish that they’d just get it done and over with. I have a feeling that Camille and I are going to have to choose who we live with. I’m going to go wherever Camille goes, seeing as she needs me. I’m the only one who really cares for her.
Uncle Joe is getting worse, too. His chest pains are becoming more and more severe. If I lose him or Camille, I’ll die on the inside. It won’t be like losing you, it’ll be worse. Losing you destroyed me, but if I lost Uncle Joe or Camille, I wouldn’t have direction in my life. It just hurts me so much to even think of losing either of them.
Sitting under this tree, Zachary, is reminding me of old times. When we first met, which was ironically enough, under this tree. I remember you thinking I was the ugliest and weirdest girl in the world, but then you soon became attached to me. You soon couldn’t leave me alone, and we became friends. You were my first friend, you were my only friend. Now you are gone, and all I have left are Uncle Joe and Camille, and I’m slowly losing them, as well.
I must go now, for it is almost midnight, I believe. I love you, Zachary, and I hope you are peaceful.
Love always,
Lily
Lily shut her journal, and stuffed it and her pen back into her bag. Sighing, she leaned back against the tree, resting her head on it. She thought of so many things while she sat there, until she felt something wet hit her face. She looked up to see raindrops falling from the sky. It reminded her of the day she and Zachary met. She soon felt tears spilling out of her eyes, and they mingled with the rain. Lily sat there, crying over her best friend, as the rain fell.
He had no idea what he was doing. He was just supposed to be going for a midnight walk. Now, he was watching the young girl cry at a grave under a tree in the park on the outskirts of town.
He watched her until she had fallen asleep under the tree. That’s when he went over to her. He had no idea why she was out there, in the middle of the night, in the pouring rain, or where she lived, so he decided to take her back to his place so she’d be warm and his sister would let her borrow some clothes. He snaked his arms under her, and picked her up bridal style, making sure he grabbed her bag. He covered her face with her hoodie as he carried her to his house to keep the rain off.
When he was home, he carried her up the stairs, into his room, laying her down on the bed. He pulled the covers over her slender body and kissed her forehead gently, before going over to the couch by his window and lying down.
