“Your attention, please. British Airways announces the arrival of our flight, number A362, to the Heathrow International Airport. Please fasten your seatbelts and prepare for landing. Thank you for choosing British Airways, have a delightful day!”
I suddenly woke up.
“Oh god, oh god, oh god!! The plane’s falling! I don’t wanna die; I’m too young! I’m only 21! HELP ME!!”
Everyone was staring at me as if I had grown another head. I felt myself blush. I was dreaming that the plane was falling and then that stupid flight attendant had to wake me up like that! Ugh, how embarrassing! Of course I thought the plane was falling for real, we were descending, for Christ’s sake! Now everyone thinks I’m just some crazy weirdo with mental issues. Great; just what I needed today.
“Um, I’m sorry…,” Well I think that was enough. It made them turn their heads, thankfully. Now I can finally have some peace until we land in Heathrow. I’m so excited I might scream! I’m moving to London to finish the last year of my English Literature major at University College London. Isn’t that cool? It’s a dream come true.
About 10 minutes went by and then –out of a sudden– we landed in London. YAY! Everyone started gathering their stuff to exit the plane as fast as they could. No one wants to make a 4 hour line, I suppose. Thank God I was sitting in the front area of the plane, so I was one of the first people to leave.
Once I went through immigration and got my bags at the luggage claim, I was free to go; I just had to grab a cab. It was easy though, being from New York had its advantages.
I entered the cab, told the driver where I was headed to and started to rummage around the information I had. I was going to live in a dorm room –which is pretty cool because I get to have a roommate, in other words, a friend to start the new year. I just wish it’s a really nice girl who I can befriend with, without having any problems.
When the black cab left me in front of the UCL entrance, I set my mind to walk towards the dorms. I was told mine was located on the left wing of the campus. I grabbed a uni map from my bag and gaped at it. Oh crap, that was miles away! But looking at it from the bright side, I could walk around the campus and search my surroundings on my way there.
Everything is so clean here; there’s tons of grass everywhere. It looks like replica of Central Park, but adapted to the European style. The students sat on benches and under the trees while chatting or studying; however, some of them were just admiring the view. The main building was like those you only see in the movies. Built to resemble the entrance of the Greek Parthenon, the stairs and the columns leading to them where built in white marble, and from a certain distance I could distinguish a dome behind the façade. It was simply breathtaking.
I am already loving it here. I’ve always been that kind of girl that likes the old fashion: castles, royalty, happy ever after. Mainly, that´s why I’m studying English: due to those old books that I’ve read, like Shakespeare or Jane Austen. Oh my god, I love Romeo and Juliet. Sometimes, I wish I had a love like theirs –of course, it’s not like I want to be found dead under my lover’s cadaver. But still. Now, Pride and Prejudice –I crave for a love like Lizzy and Darcy’s. So beautiful and true and perfect… I sigh internally.
