It all began on a warm summer night. I was walking home with some friends. There were four of us: me, my best friend Roan, his brother Ben and Ben's girlfriend Teresa. We were coming back from a party, so we were a little tipsy. We had a wonderful evening that day, we were laughing and singing. We felt that nothing could stop us. On our way home, Roan came up with a crazy idea. "Why don't we visit the graveyard?" He said. "In the middle of the night?" Theresa asked. "Yeah, why not?" Ben chimed in. After some persuasion, we went of to the graveyard. We climbed the steep stairs that led to it. In the middle of that graveyard stood the famous St. Mary's church, one of the Whitby monuments. Teresa remarked that this place creeped her out , especially because it was dark. "I kinda like it, maybe I'll come back here sometime later to make some photo's" I said a little to cheerful. Roan laughed at this and suggested that we should do it right now. "Right now?" Me and Teresa asked in perfect unison. "What?" He laughed. "Are you afraid?" "Of course not, why would you think that?" I respond a little to confident. The alcohol probably helped a little bit. "Well, let's go then." Roan said with a mischievous grin. "No, come on. We can come back tomorrow, when it's not dark." Teresa said. Roan and Ben, however, kept on pushing until we gave in. And after some persuasion, we were of to the church.First we walked trough the graveyard. There were tombstones in all forms and sizes. mostly stone plaques, but there were crosses to, some made of iron, others made of stone. The moon was shining bright that night, it wasn't hindered by clouds to block it of. It casted shadows on the ground, which, combined with the evening noises, would create a creepy atmosphere. Behind the church, we could see the outlines of Whitby Abbey in the moonlight, which was an absolutely breathtaking sight. All of a sudden, we heard a loud scream. We turned around in shock, looking at a terrified Teresa. I looked up to see the source of her discomfort. "It's just bats, nothing to worry about." I said. Then, I thought I saw something in the corner of my eye, but when I looked, it was gone. I discarded it as nothing.
After a while, we finally made it to the church. Roan picked the lock and I opened the large wooden door, it's rusty hinges screeched in protest. We ignited the torches on our mobile phones and walked inside. The interior was marvellous, with paintings and large statues and colored windows. The ancient stone walls giving it that extra charm which you always have with old buildings. We walked on the path between the benches towards the altar, on which lay an old bible. I was never a religious person myself, but I could definitely appreciate the beauty of the art in this place.
Out of nowhere, we heard Ben yelling he had found something. we ran to were he was standing. It was a small building right beside the church. 'Whitby Crypt' the inscription above the door read. "I didn't know we had a crypt." I said in surprise. "Let's go in there" Roan said. Ben opened the gate and we went inside. It smelled old an moist. The stairs were slippery. We eventually reached the tomb, there was poison ivy and cobwebs all over the place. The walls were covered with human skulls. I these walls were stone beds with arched ceilings, and on these beds, wrapped in cloths, were lying the remains of humans. Presumably priests and nobles, according to the names underneath each bed. We walked further into the crypt, to an altar. Above the altar were hanging three crosses made out of human bones and each cross was topped by a skull. However, these skulls were not human. They had large fangs and sharp teeth. On the altar was a coffin, covered in dust. I wiped the dust with my hands and read the words that were written there. "Vampire" "Cool", Roan exclaimed. "Let's open it, I've always wanted to see a vampire." "Oh come on." Teresa said. "We should not disturb the dead, we shouldn't even be here in the first place." "It's a little late for that." Ben joined in. "Since we're here, we might as well take a look." So we opened the lid and saw the corps. It was very well preserved, given its age and despite the fact that it didn't get any special treatment. It's head was deformed, resembling the skulls hanging above the bone crosses.
It's chest was pierced by a large iron stake.
I pulled the stake out of it's chest and examined it. All of a sudden, Roan pulled the stake out of my hand. "Let me look at it." By doing so, a sharp edge ripped open my hand. Blood started dripping off my hand and on the corpse. "ouch, you idiot. Look what you did." I yelled at him. "Oh, I'm so sorry Tay, Are you okay?" "What do you think Moron? I'm fucking bleeding!" I yelled. "I'm leaving this place." With that, i stormed out of the place and went home. The others followed me, trying to apologize and convince me to stay. I, however, had no intention on staying there. I was already wounded by an old peace of metal. I might as well be infected with some ancient disease. Teresa came along with me, claiming she didn't wanted me to be on my own in this hour of the night. But I'd rather thing she didn't wanted to be left alone with those two wankers. Even if one of them was her boyfriend. Once home, I took care of my hand and bandaged it. After that, I went to sleep.
That night, I had a dream. I was in the church again, but it was different this time. The place was a total mess. chairs were spread across the floor, peaces of statues of holy people were lying all around. Some statues were still intact, but the elements did have an effect on them. they looked menacing, pointing their fingers at me like was some sinner. The large glass windows were shattered and ivy was growing all over the place. It looked beautiful. It could've been a painting by Victoria Frances. God I love her work. I walked up to the altar, candle holders were lying on the floor. The wind was howling trough the crumbled walls. I saw peaces of a ripped painting lying on the floor. The remains of an old bible were lying near the altar. The cloth that was covering the altar was dirty and torn.
Then, I was in the crypt again. It was even creepier than before. The coffin was still open. I saw the corpse inside it opening it's eyes and looking right into mine. An evil grin appeared on it's disfigured face. Then it started to move and it crawled out of his coffin and stumbled towards me. It reached out it's arms and grabbed me by my shoulders. It's eyes glowing blood red in it's sockets. I saw two large fangs appear in it's mouth and it went straight to my neck.
I jolted up awake in my bed, bathing in sweat and breathing heavily. I went downstairs to drink some water and went to bed again, discarding the whole this as just some bad dream.
