After a surprisingly quiet lunch, we grabbed our trunks and with some difficulty, took them down through the two sets of stairs and into the garage. Talos was already there, sitting next to the car, amber eyes watching us curiously. Despite being my age, he looked as fit as when he was in his prime."Talos IS coming with us right?" This might sound weird but I never really went anywhere without hm. Even at school, for some reason the principal chose Talos as the only exception for the no pets rule. Restaurants, parties even the movies. Wherever I went, Talos was there, or at least somewhere close by. Mom said that father, my biological one, had trained him to watch out for me. How did he do that when I wasn't even born? Good question.
"We already checked with the camp, he's staying with you, the activities director already has everything to make sure he'll be alright for the Summer," Mom replied as we put the trunks on the back of the car. We weren't rich, but dad went am extra mile to make sure we had all the comfort we needed. Soon enough, we were on the street. Lucas was watching something with his 4G, while I was sending out texts to my friends, warning them I wouldn't be able to join them anytime soon. Dad was focused on the road while mom looked out the window. When she saw me and Lucas with our phones she froze.
"Can you two appreciate the scenery? I know it was sudden but it's the first time we leave town in a while, it might do good for you two to enjoy the view," Mom told us, after 12 years living with her, I knew when to listen and when to ignore. It was a 9 hour ride from Novi to New York. Considering it was already 15:30 when we left home, dad planned for us to spend a night in Cleveland, Ohio, before continuing on the next day. Dad loved road trips, one time we went from our home in Novi, to Florida and then to California. All inside the car. Only when gas prices got too high did he even consider taking an airplane.
"Oh look, a tree. Oh look another tree." Lucas glanced through the window for two seconds before he started repeating the statement. I rolled my eyes, wouldn't we get enough to see once we got to camp? I had no idea how right I was. As the hours went on I was either asleep, using the 3DS and IPad, messing with my phone or trying to get a straight answer would of my dad while mom and Lucas napped. Talos was asleep on my lap, his tail occasionally twitching.
Due to his dyslexia, Lucas was having trouble with his phone so he just slept. After three hours of unanswered questions and the hated pronoun game we finally arrived. Cleveland wasn't that different from Novi if you took out the large buildings in the center. Soon, we stopped by a motel with a view of Lake Eerie. It was no spa but like I said before, my dad was very uptight when it came to security and comfort. Parking behind it, we left the car, Talos included, and headed inside.
It was composed of white marble and large windows displaying it's interior. Soon enough, we were greeted by a wave of cold air as we entered the lobby. Aside from some fancy leather couches and a silent tv playing The Avengers, it had a few paintings on the walls. While mom, Lucas and I sat on the couches, Talos settling at my feet as usual, dad talked with the attendant.
"Sunshine Hotel, couldn't they come up with anything better?" Lucas, grumpy after being awoken, asked. Knowing he'd be snapping until we got to camp, and too tired to come up with a witty reply, I settled for watching the tv. Didn't take long for me to start getting bored, if they left the tv silent, couldn't they at least put up subtitles? Apparently not. After so long inside the car, I needed to move around a little. Talos jumped to his paws as soon as I stood up. Mom was talking with someone on the phone and Lucas was just annoyed to do anything other than watch the tv. I began to explore my surroundings. Starting with the paintings on the walls. While most showed views of Lake Eerie, a few showed a large snake emerging from or around the lake. Yet, while some showed a creature akin to a plesiosaurus, others revealed large snakes or eels. The lack of consistency despite the same name given to all of them left me skeptical, maybe a bit amused.
