Flash Back: Automail, Age 12

Mr. Hughes led me down the road towards the house. I kept hold of my staff as we walked and stared at the ground.

"Dani, come on, cheer up. You'll be able to use your arm again!" He smiled.

I looked at him and gave him a tiny smile. He cheered.

"A smile! A small one, but a smile!" He cheered as we walked.

I nodded and walked faster towards te house. There was a dog lying there and it looked at us then began barking.

"Oh hush, Den! I'm working!" An old lady came out with a pipe in her mouth.

She looked at me then Maes, "What're you two doing out here?"

"Well, this is-"

"I'm Daniella Howard and I need Automail." I said sharply.

The woman raised an eyebrow, "Oh really, do you need it, or do you want it?"

"I need it because I'm going to grow strong and protect the people without joining the military." I said as I climbed the steps.

The woman nodded, "Well then, we'll get started."

I beamed and Maes ruffled my short hair. We walked inside and I saw a girl my age working on some Automal.

"Winry, get this girl's measurements. She needs Autmail." The woman gave me a wink.

The girl turned and gasped, "You-You're Ed and Al's friend from Dublith!"

I jumped in surprise, "You know them?"

"Yeah, we grew up together. They brought back a picture of you and... They really miss you." She replied and got down from her seat.

I held out my right hand, "Well then, I'm Dani Howard."

She took my hand we both smiled, knowing we would become great friends even when she would be my Automail mechanic.

"Okay, we're going to begin the surgery." Pinako said with a small hint of sympathy.

I nodded and Maes grabbed my hand.

Winry stood beside her grandmother all throughout the procedure. When it began I was letting of some screams and in the end, I whimpered as they put the final touches before they attached the nerves.

"We're about to attach the nerves. You alright, girl?" Pinako asked.

I nodded and looked away. The jolt of every nerve in my right arm lighting made me scream the loudest I'd ever screamed. I wriethed on the table and continued screaming. It hurt so much...

It slowly ebbed away and I looked at Winry. She had a worried frown as she checked my Automail.

"Test your right arm girl." Pinako ordered.

I clenched both hands and grinned when I saw my right hand close.

"Thank you." I sighed.

"The rehabilitation will take years, Dani. Are you alright with that?" Winry asked.

I looked at her, "I can do it in a year, Winry. It's a promise."

She nodded, "Ed said something similar."

I frowned, "What? Why did he get Automail?"

"It's not my place to tell you, but he and Al... they aren't the same anymore." She replied and looked away.

I nodded and pushed myself up. I held onto my right arm vowing, I would get Lust. She would pay fo killing my father.
