Home.
What is a home?
Alexander didn't know
John doesn't appreciate his home
He doesn't care for people who don't have a home
You see loads of fake homeless people on the streets of New...
John and Alexander walked to Lafayette's house together. They had a conversation, with Alexander using his whiteboard. John smiled several times. Seeing John smile made Alexander want to keep making him smile. He made jokes and talked about other interests with John. The two bonded and actually had a lot in common. John didn't feel weird about talking to Alexander without Alexander actually using his voice. Alex would laugh sometimes or scoff depending on their conversation, and it made John feel... special. He was just thinking that Alexander was weird so why Now was he comfortable? Is it because of what Maria said? He didn't know, but at the time, he didn't care. All that mattered was him and Alexander. Nothing else on his mind. When Alexander got John to smile, it felt like his heart skipped a beat, and he was going to suffocate from the loss of breath. He felt.. different. Before going to Lafayette's place, John led Alex to his own house. Warning him ahead of time, about his sibling, and that they were going to his house first. He wanted to drop his backpack off there. As they were walking, the conversation got a little bit serious..
'So, this might be an uncomfortable question for you, and you don't have to answer. I'm just curious, where did you get that scar?'
Alexander wrote. His expression was soft. John tensed a bit from fear but took a deep breath to calm himself.
"I was born with most of my face.. just, out of place. My jaw wasn't in the right place, there were teeth growing from my lip, and my top lip extended up to the middle of my cheek. Couple years ago we finally could afford surgery to fix me." John explained, a small frown on his face. Alexander frowned a bit but put a hand on John's shoulder. John looked towards him and smiled softly.
'I think it makes you look tough and cool. It's nothing to be ashamed of.'
John smiled at the kind words.
"Thanks Lex..." John said. Alexander nodded as he smiled softly at John. John felt something hit the top of his head. He looked up and saw grey storm clouds in the air.
"Looks like it's about to rain." John stated. Alexander visibly tensed. He held his whiteboard close to his chest. It started to sprinkle rain. The sidewalk slowly turning a darker brown from the rain. Alexander started shivering. From fear, and the cold chilling wind that came with the rain. John glanced over at Alexander and raised an eyebrow.
"You okay?" He asked nonchalantly. He was genuinely concerned though from Alexander's behavior when the storm started.
'I think I'm just going to go home instead of going to Laf's...'
He wrote on the whiteboard. His hands were shaking slightly as he wrote which only raised John's concerns.
"I'll text him that. You can come over to my place instead? If that's okay with your parents." John offered. Alexander flinched when he heard the word parents. A lighting strike sent a flash of light across the city, thunder following after. Alexander flinched and whimpered. His breathing became uneven. John looked very worried now. Alexander looked like he was going to have a break down but was just holding it back. John hesitated on what to do. He took a deep breath and grabbed Alexander's hand. Alex flinched at the contact and looked at John. A tear fell down Alexander's face. John smiled softly at Alex.
"I'm right here.. nothing can hurt you. We're almost at my house. You can stay there." John told Alexander in a soothing voice. The two passed by the apartment building where Maria lived. Maria was on the balcony, enjoying the rain what it seemed like. She looked down at John and Alexander, and smiled. She waved a bit to John, and went back inside. John waved back, using his free hand. Alexander was too focused on trying to control his breathing to worry about who John was waving to. John rubbed circles on the top of Alexander's hand. Alexander seemed to relax a bit and squeezed John's hand a bit for comfort. John finally approached his house. He opened the door and was met with his brother on the kitchen counter playing video games, Martha cleaning, and Addy mushing up her food that was on her tray table. Making a mess on her outfit and hands along with her face. John smiled a bit but it turned into a sour scowl when he saw his father passed out on the chair. He sighed and thunder shook the house a bit. Alexander whimpered again louder and held onto John's hand tightly. John lead Alexander up the wooden stairs and to his room. He locked the door so no one would come in. Alexander was still shivering as he held to his whiteboard tightly. He scratched at his arms. John noticed and took the whiteboard from Alexander. He took both of Alexander's hands in his own to prevent him from scratching himself. Alexander looked into John's eyes fearfully, more tears streamed down his face like a waterfall.
"Breath.." John said calmly. He helped Alexander to his bed and sat him down. Alexander tried calming his rapid breathing but couldn't seem to. Lighting struck and Alexander bit his lip so he didn't scream. It came out as a high pitched whimper that made John's heart break.
"Alex, calm down.. do you know ASL?" John asked calmly. He was determined to help Alexander. Alex nodded and pulled his hands away from John to cover his ears. John smiled softly.
"So do I. I'm going to ask you some questions and you can answer in ASL." John told Alexander. He nodded and took his hands away from his ears.
"What's your favorite color?" John asked. Alexander seemed confused but answered.
Green
"Nice! Mine is too. I like light green mostly more than dark green. But all shades of green are great. They're the color of turtles and turtles are great. They're my favorite animal. What's your favorite animal?" John went on while smiling.
I like dogs. I like how many breeds there are.
Alexander responded. They continued this with many questions. Just getting to know each other. Before they knew it, Alex had calmed down and didn't even notice the rain had stopped. They talked for hours until the sun started to go down.
"Dang, time flies. You should probably head home. I wouldn't want to worry your family."
Alexander flinched but nodded slowly. He took his white board and gathered his things. John's siblings were already in bed so John walked with Alexander to the door.
"I'll see you at school, yeah?" John asked while smiling a bit. John didn't realize how good smiling felt until he let himself do it. Alex seemed a bit nervous and he nodded. He turned to leave but paused. John tilted his head at this but Alex turned and hugged John tightly. Standing on his toes a bit. John tensed and felt his ears heat up a bit. He relaxed and hugged back gently. Alex pulled away and bit his lip. He sighed and looked up at John.
"Th-Thank y-y-You..." Alex mumbled in a shy, barely audible voice. With that, He turned and walked out the door. Leaving John shocked and feeling very special...
