Hey guys I had a new idea and decided to take my story in a different direction so if you could re-read the Prologue it would probably help you understand this chapter a little better. No huge changes just little stuff like their ages and whatnot. Thanks!

*Later that night*

My phone vibrates in my hand causing my game to glitch out and for me to lose. "Dangit!" I exclaim, "This had better be good for interrupting me."

I click on the text notification and realize it's from an unknown number. "Hmm I wonder who this could be..."

"Hey this is Marcus" I read out loud.

"Marcus.... What Marcus do I know....?" I think aloud, nothing registering in my brain at this hour.

I text back- Marcus who?

The reply I get is- Marcus Winley

I shriek girlishly then clamp my hand over my mouth quickly, regaining my composure.

The feeling of excitement is quickly followed by dread as I start to think about the fact that he might like me. This gets in the way of all my plans. My plans of finishing my last year of high school, going to college, never getting married, and living an average life by myself.

The idea of having a "soul mate" used to appeal to me but that all changed once... It.... Happened.

I shudder. I don't even like to think about It let alone deal with it so I look back at my phone realizing that I still haven't texted him back. My fingers move around the keypad not knowing what to type.

Maybe he doesn't like me. I think to myself. Maybe he just wants to be friends?

I decide to find out.

I reply back- Hey what's up?

Marcus- Not much wbu

Me- Sitting in my room texting people

Marcus- Cool. I got your number from Nichole btw in case you were wondering.

Me- Oh okay

I know right? Not the drama filled conversation you might have been expecting.

Nichole is my boy loving, crazy best friend. She knows more about me than I do and is absolutely the best friend I could ask for.

Our conversation continues for awhile with nothing to interesting to point out. Except the fact that he uses kissy face emojis 😘 A LOT.

But that could just be his thing.... Because he can't like me. It just wouldn't work.

*The next day*

At weights the next day Marcus acts perfectly normal. I decide then that this means that him getting my number, texting me, and sending kissy face emojis means nothing.

This lifts a huge weight off of my chest and I go back to my normal workout routine. Then as I'm walking out of the gym and paying far too much attention to my phone and not to walking, I bump into someone.

And down I go. But just before my rear end hits the ground I feel a hand wrap around my skinny wrist and pull me up. I look up to meet the eyes of Marcus who smiles, winks and says, "You're lucky I caught you"

I stutter out a thank you and smile before saying well I better get going and leave him standing there, my wrist still warm where he touched me.

I rush out into the warm summer air and speed walk to Dereck's car.

Once I get back to my house I let myself in and call out a, "Is anyone home?" The only reply I get is my own echo. We're not exactly rich but we're definitly not poor. Our house isn't a mansion but... Okay it's a mansion. Don't be too jealous though because my only family, my dad and my older sister Victoria hate me.

Because of what I did.

Because I'm the reason my mom isn't here with us.

I don't really blame them, after all it's my fault that our family is broken and can't be fixed. If I hadn't made that one stupid mistake it could have all been different. But I made the mistake and now I have to live with it.

***

I decide to call Nichole and ask her to come over since my dad is away doing who knows what and my sister is at her friends house.

***

The door bursts open and I know it's Nichole. We've been friends for a long time and by now she's pretty comfortable with my house.

"ABBY" she shouts

"LIVING ROOM" I shout back

She comes running around the corner and I laugh at how excited she looks.

"MARCUS ASKED ME FOR YOUR NUMBER!" She says, still shouting even though we're in the same room now.

"And..." I say back deciding to mess around with her.

"WELL DID HE TEXT YOU!?!?!?!?" She asks.

"Yes he did" I reply

"WELL GIVE ME DETAILS! ARE YOU GUYS DATING? DOES HE LIKE YOU? CAN I BE YOUR MAID OF HONOR?

"NICHOLE" I shout, "Calm down and stop shouting we're in the same room I can hear you just fine. and to answer your questions No. I don't know. I'm not getting married"

She finally calms down as I fill her in on the less than exciting details of Marcus's and I's conversation. When I tell her about what happened in the hallway she almost faints, declaring how cute we are and how we need to go out.

That is until I remind her that I will never have a relationship with anyone. It's just not a safe thing to do after what happened last time.

She nods sympathetically, patting my knee and asking me if I want to talk about it.

I wipe my eyes and tell her that I'm fine. Which I am, kind of.
