I unlocked my locker and grabbed my books for my morning classes. Suddenly, I was swept off my feet and being caught in a gigantic hug.

"Logan?!?" I squealed. Logan and I have been best friends since first grade, but he had started going to a prestigious all boys school in 7th grade.

"Hey, love." He kissed my forehead lightly, "How have you been?" I struggled out of his arms to face him.

"It's been ages! I missed you! Why haven't you answered your phone?!? I've needed to talk to you!" I ranted in his face.

"Ow darling, I'm standing right here. I lost my phone and my parents wouldn't give me a new one. And yes, I missed you too. Oh, and I dropped out of that school full of idiots. They don't understand how much they have. They took advantage of everything. So here I am!" Logan grinned from ear to ear and pointed at himself.

I grabbed Logan's hand and sprinted down the hallway. "What's your schedule?" I called behind me as I trampled a 7th grader over, "Sorry!" I called back, not caring at all. Suddenly, my pocket started vibrating and my hand instinctively reached for the locket that hung at my neck. "Maybe they've found Mom." I thought to myself. I knew it wasn't going to happen anyways. I gave up hope in finding my mom ever again 4 years ago. I grabbed the phone and answered.

"Hello?" I asked.

"Hello. Is this Miss Brooklyn Higgins?" The voice on the other end asked.

"Yes, yes this is her." I responded formally. "May I ask who is calling?"

"This is Northern Valley Hospital calling to inform you that your sister, Sophie Higgins, has been in a car accident and did not survive." The voice responded cautiously.

"What?" I choked out the words. Sophie couldn't have left me. I needed her. She needed me.

"Please come to the hospital as soon as you can Miss Higgins. Visiting hours end at 8 pm." The voice informed me. I heard a click.

I put my phone back in my pocket as a waterfall of tears paraded down my cheeks and sloshed onto the floor. "S-s-sophie….. Sophie died!" I sobbed, grasping onto Logan's green t-shirt.

He hugged me tightly and soothingly whispered, "It's gonna be okay. Shhh. Shhh." I poured my eyes out as Logan carefully guided me to the front office and explained to them what had happened. He managed to persuade them to let me go to the hospital to go and see Sophie for a last time.

I have a pounding headache, and my vision is blurred with tears. I start to fall, grasping at the still air. "Brooke!" I hear my name called repeatedly. I try to answer but it seems as if my tongue has been tied in knots. Suddenly everything blacks out.
