CHAPTER THREE:
SHERLOCK
'wanderlust'
IN HER LIFE Elizabeth didn't believe she had have ever truly felt so at peace. Although the six of them were walking through a radiation soaked jungle- planet actually, it didn't occur to her that they could be slowly dying. Instead her thoughts consisted of how beautiful everything was, how serene and she let it lift the burdens off of her shoulders for as long as they could.
Even if they had just seen a mutated deer.
'Hey, you know what I'd like to know? Why send us down today after ninety seven years? What changed?' Finn asks suddenly, it had been a peaceful seven minutes.
'Who cares? I'm just glad they did. I woke up rotting in a cell, and now I'm spinning in a forest.' Octavia replies using the tree as a pole to spin around, it goes unnoticed by Finn and Elizabeth feel sorry for her.
'Maybe they found something on a satellite, you know, like an old weather satellite or...' Monty theorises, but she knew that's not why.
'It wasn't a satellite. The Ark is dying.' She informs the group, she was sure the council wouldn't be bothered, especially since they sent them here to die anyway. Clarke looked at her in surprise, 'How do you know?' she asks.
'Axel told me...' Elizabeth realized neither of them knew who Axel was, 'he's a guard. a friend.' she adds. Monty smiles playfully, 'I didn't know you had other friends.' she jabs his arm with her shoulder, but smiles regardless.
'She's right. At the current population level, there's roughly three months left of life support, maybe four now that we're gone.' Clarke replies continuing to walk. Elizabeth's stomach still drops, but she pushes her worries back. When they get to Mount Weather, the resources will help them communicate back to the Ark and everyone will come down and it will all be okay, she told herself.
'So that was the secret they locked you up to keep, why they kept you in solitary, floated your old man?' Finn asks seemingly very invested in Clark's personal life, Clarke nods.
'My father was the engineer who discovered the flaw. He thought the people had a right to know. The Council disagreed. My mother disagreed. They were afraid it would cause a panic. We were gonna go public, anyway, when Wells...' The conversation was clearly upsetting Clarke, but she continues either way, pulling herself together.
'What, turned in your dad?' Monty asks voicing everyone's thoughts. Elizabeth frowns at Clarke, 'I'm so sorry.' she says sincerely and Clarke nods in appreciation. 'The guard showed up before we could. That's why today. That's why it was worth the risk. Even if we all die, at least they bought themselves more time.' she says sighing.
'They're gonna kill more people, aren't they?' Monty asks rhetorically, and Elizabeth feels sick at the thought. Since her father worked as a respective senior at engineering and Axel was a guard (the two were the only people she cared about in the ark) they would most likely be safe, but what about every other innocent soul?
'Good. After what they did to me, I say, float them all.' Octavia says strutting past, Elizabeth can't control her annoyance at the ignorant statement.
'You shouldn't say that. The only people to blame are the council, not the countless of other innocent lives.' she says, even though she worries that her tone was too harsh, she believed strongly in what she had said.
'Sorry, I didn't mean that.' Octavia mutters and it was clear she didn't, Octavia had been locked up for existing, if anyone deserved to be angry it was her. But she shouldn't displace that anger where it doesn't belong. Elizabeth considered that the only person Octavia cared about was with her on earth, so empathising with others on the ark was unnecessary.
