After that day, me and Clem went to my house. Mari was there, too of course.
"Hello, son. How was school today?" My father asked me, as I walk in. My father was in the army at the time, so it was very rare to see him home.
"Well, dad I need to speak to you about something in private," I mention.
"C'mon, Mari, sweetie, let's give the boys their space," Clem tells Mari, as they walk into another room.
"So, son what is so important that you've gotta tell me?"
"Well, dad. Marianna got her candy bar stolen, so I had to get it back, but I got jumped," I say.
"Mhm, yes, I've noticed the dirt marks on you. It's okay though. You did the right thing," dad enlightens, as he pats my shoulder.
"Just try to man up a bit more next time, or I'm gonna have to train you into becoming a real soldier," he chuckled. I chuckle back.
Clem and Mari come back in the room. Clem has our house phone in her hands.
"David, the phone's for you," Clem mentions. She gives my father the phone.
"Hello," dad says in a deep voice.
"Yep, okay. See ya soon, honey, and don't worry, I'll bring Mari with." Dad hangs up.
"Well, that was Kate. She wants me to bring Mari with, so she can watch Kate get her hair done. Female bonding, I guess. Save me."
"Wow, R.I.P," I laugh.
"Gabe, you and Clementine watch the house while we're gone. Javi's at a baseball game. Goodbye, and no parties."
"Got ya, sir," I reply.
"Good," he states.
They leave, and it is just Clem and I here.
"So what do you want to do?" Clem asked me.
"Oh I was thinking we could play euchre and chill," I propose.
"Yeah, great idea, and then after that we can play Dungeons and Dragons, or perhaps Magic the Gathering," she mentions sarcastically.
"Next time I'd appreciate no sarcasm, Clem. Well, I can always trim the lights down, light up some candles, and..."
"Oh, Gabe," Clem interrupted me. She thought I was getting romantic. Well, I kinda was.
"And I just wanted to say... Thanks for helping me earlier today when dealing with Max. I know it wasn't easy," I inform.
"Aww, you're welcome, Gabe, but you helped Mari, and for that you're brave."
I put my hands on her face.
"You look beautiful in the candlelight, Clementine." She puckers her lips on mine, and we kiss in the magic of candlelight.
The candles and the sunlight lerking through the curtains are the only lights in our midst.
