Elise

"Elise, I need you to do a quick favour."

I look up from my phone, raising an eyebrow. "What do you need?"

Mom holds out a large tinfoil container. I widen my eyes excitedly. I could smell the aroma of brownies coming from it. "Ah, you're not going to eat it." Mom says.

"What? But mo-"

"They're for the neighbours, Elise. They just moved in next door." Mom explains. "I just need you to bring these to them, then leave. Alright?"

I groan, my laziness kicking in. "Why can't you do it?" I whine.

"I have work to do, Elise. Now go." Mom says sternly. Ugh, this was so unfair.

I grab the container from her hands and slip on a pair of Toms before I left the door. I shiver from the slight gust of wind. Why did I go out in shorts and a tank top? I should've changed. Oh well.

I hop down the steps, and walk up to the house next door. I ring their doorbell, and the door opens a few minutes later. "Hello?"

"Hi, I'm your new neighbour. I live right next door, and my mom wanted to give you something. Here!" I say chirpily.

"Well, thank you! Hey, why don't you and your mom stay for dinner?" The kind lady offers.

Since I don't want to be rude, I smile hesitantly. "Uh, I'll go ask her."

"Alright. And your name is...?"

"Um, Elise. Elise Summers." I reply. The lady nods.

"I'm Mrs. Reynolds. Well you should go ask your mom, now."

I nod and rush to my house. I open the door, and call out for Mom. "Mom? Mom!"

"Yes, honey?" Mom answers from upstairs.

"The neighbours are wondering if you wanna stay for dinner!" I say loudly. I hear a bunch of things bumping against each other, before a door swings open with mom stumbling down the stairs.

"Great! We'll be there." Mom says happily, pulling me along.

I sat down at the Reynolds' dinner table, and awkwardly play with my fingers. Mom was busy chatting away with Mrs. Reynolds, so I had nothing to do. I pull out my phone, unlock it, and begin to play a game. Just then, Mrs. Reynolds walks out of the kitchen.

"CARTER!! COME DOWNSTAIRS, WE HAVE GUESTS!" She yells.

Hm, Carter's probably her son. I continue the game, hearing loud footsteps running down the stairs.

"Who are they?" Carter asks.

"Our new neighbours. Say hi!" Mrs. Reynolds beams.

"Oh, hi." He nods and smiles at me in acknowledgement. I do the same. I become engrossed in the game, before Mom interrupts me.

"Hey, Elise."

"Yeah?" I say, shutting off my phone.

"Let's eat!"

Mom sits beside me, in front of Mrs. Reynolds, and Carter sits in front of me. I take my food and begin eating, before a sharp pain hit my leg.

"What was that for?" I whisper sharply. Carter looks at me innocently. I roll my eyes, kicking him back. This continued until my calves were numb.

"So Carter's going to Palm Springs? Hey, Elise goes there too!" Mom remarks. Mrs. Reynolds' eyes widen in excitement. They begin chattering about carpooling and whatnot. I tune off of their conversation, and finish my food. I don't interact with Carter anymore that night.

After dinner, Mom and I walk back home. "They're nice people, aren't they?"

"Mhm." I reply, extremely tired.

I walk up to my room, and brush my teeth. Wait a minute.. Reynolds sounds familiar. But I just can't pinpoint it. I shrug, walking back to bed. I fall into a deep sleep.
