Ella and I had awoken to my alarm screaming the same monotone beeping sound. I slowly rolled over in my sleeping bag wanting to continue the dream I was having, but to no avail.
With a disappointed sigh escaping my lips I dragged myself off the comfy spot on the floor and got myself ready.

Ella walked out of the bathroom wearing the clothes my mother had laid out for her the night prior. An oversized flannel, button shirt that was tied in a knot at the front, making it fit her small frame better, and skinny jeans that appeared to be old and worn down but still knew. The clothes looked to be something we would've bought for a teenage girl, the fact we had female outfits confused me but it didn't matter too much I suppose.

I smiled at the blonde to receive a bright, time stopping smile in return. Walking downstairs we headed to the kitchen to be greeted with the smell of blueberry pancakes, the scent filled my lungs as if it was my oxygen. The corners of my mouth twitched up into a small smile.

"Thank you, again for letting me stay the night. I know it was last minute but I really appreciate it." Ella gushed to my mom as she took a seat next to me at the counter. "Its not a problem Ella, You're welcome anytime." My mom hummed. Pancakes were served and devoured just as fast.

After eating, I looked at the clock to see that their was still 30 minutes till school started. I usually  set my alarm several minutes early so I can go to the city Library to draw in quiet. It was great too because the City library in this area happened to be a block or two away from the high school.

Taking the dirty dishes and rinsing them off in the sink, I decided to tell mom about Ella while she was in my room, insisting on making the bed. Even though I told her it wasn't a big deal. She was stubborn however and didn't let it slide.

"Ahh I see then." Mom said after a minute or two of me explaining what happened yesterday. "Im sorry, I should've told you or called you, but she needed a friend." I stammered quietly. Feeling a little bit guilty for inviting a girl over without my parents knowledge. Although nothing would have happened anyway if thats what they were initially worried about. Looking up to meet my mothers shining grey eyes that were glassy from tears building up. She held my shoulders softly, a big smile spread across her face. Her happy features showed how proud of me she was. Most of my childhood I didn't have friends. Now here I was calling Ella a friend on my own doing, not a forced title. She was a real friend.

She didn't need to say anything. Her smile and tears of happiness said it all. I smiled back at my mom and looked at the time again, 16 minuets. I kissed my moms cheek saying an I love you, before going up to my room to get Ella.

"Hey Issac, can we stop by my house so I can't get my bag?" She asked as we walked back down the stairs. "Yeah Ill ask my mom to drive us."

We had gotten to Ella's house, which was a small red condo with the same cookie cutter houses littering the street all decorated pretty much the same but in various shades of brown, yellow, red and grey. Mom drove away for work after Ella and I had told her we could walk.  Walking into the house I was immediately hit with a cold, unloved home. The atmosphere sent a chill up my spine. I didn't want to start assuming things but the puzzle pieces started to connect. The way Hilary treated her, the way she broke down crying in my arms. She was broken. Yet she acted complete. My heart broke; no shattered. Ella was broken. This just confirmed that I need to protect her more.

"Issac?" Her happy voice called, concern laced with my name as it rolled off her tongue. "Hm?" I nonverbally asked. "Are you alright?" she asked quietly, scanning my face as she placed a slender hand on my shoulder. "Oh yeah, you ready to go?" Ella nodded, her eyes saying she wasn't convinced with my answer. But we left and began walking to school anyway.

The bell rang and off to class I went. Ella and I parted ways and headed down separate halls. My first period today was art, Unlike yesterday that was U.S history. I was excited to be taking art, my old school didn't have an art program, so I was in choir instead, and that sucked. Nothing against those who sing, I actually like the singer profession. I mean I wouldn't have great music to listen too if people didn't share their talent. Its just that I'm shy, and I can't sing. So being in choir came as a struggle to say the least.

I walked into the classroom, it was just my ascetic. Clean but also rustic. I grinned feeling a little more comfortable. In the back of the class was tables for sculpting, a kiln for firing the clay, and small pottery wheels. 'I hope we get to use those eventually.' I took a seat in the back of the class, the dark wooden desks had paint splatters across, not sure if they were on purpose or accident though. Either way it was cool. The front of the room had a chalk board with colorful notes them. Melted and deformed clocks of various shape scattered the front wall above the dark, almost piney green, chalk board. It was an odd choice for decorating but it made sense with the course.

I looked around the class for a moment or two more, just staring at everything in awe. The dark classroom door opened to reveal a small lady, she had bit round glasses hitting the tip of her nose, a dainty necklace around her wrinkled neck, her white hair in a short, curled bob that hit just about her collar bone, upon further inspection I noticed that she had vibrant green streaks in her pristine white hair. 'whoa okay, thats fricken cool!' My thoughts seemed to scream. The elder smiled at us before standing on a stool at the front of the room.

"Good morning class, I hope you all had a wonderful day yesterday, Now to begin with todays lesson." The teacher gave the class another warm smile. I felt safe in this classroom, I felt welcomed. Her wrinkled face looked over in my direction and grinned first and then confusion hit her second. "Ah I heard I was getting a new student, You must be Issac yes?" I nodded to confirm that I was indeed the new student. "Pleasure to meet you Isssac, my name is Mrs. Gleykin. If you find that you're struggling to keep up with the lessons then you are always permitted to come after school and get some help." Mrs. Gleykin warmly welcomed me and the lesson began.

Class had ended and now I needed to make my way down the crowed halls to biology. Which will probably easily become my least favorite class but thats the least of my concern. I smiled as I walked into Biology and as quickly as that smile came it was gone.
