Silence. The only thing you can hear is the monitors from the other rooms. But in this room alone, it's silent without the beeping of the monitors that the doctors turned off for us because they said they were of no use anymore.
Kale noticeably stiffens but doesn't release me from his grasp. When I realize he has no motivation to do so, I push him away with my left arm.
This seems to pull Kale out of his thoughts and he faces me with wide eyes.
"Wait, it's not what you think." Kale quickly says, and I can't help but wonder what else it could be.
I just shake my head as if to say, go back to your bed.
Kale seems to understand what I am trying to say without words and slowly gets into a sitting position. Before he swings his legs off the bed to get up, he leans down and whispers in my ear. "I promise I will explain everything."
It's when Kale is back on his bed in a sitting position, when he nods to the nurse, indicating for the nurse to allow his fiancé to enter.
The nurse is gone for less than a minute when the door flies back open and a gorgeous girl around my age enters the room. She has blond hair that ends at her shoulders in waves. Her clothes are tight enough I show her curves and her petite frame. Her big blue eyes glisten with tears as she spots Kale.
"Kale," she breathes, before dashing over to Kale's bedside.
Just as she is about to hold Kale in an embrace, but Kale gently pushes her aside, keeping his gaze locked on his lap.
"Baby, please," she pleads, "let's just forget that and be happy again."
"Really Erica?" Kale exclaims, revealing not only the name of his fiancé, but his irritated tone and also finally makes eye contact to Erica. "You slept with my best friend, for months, and want me to forget when I was on the plane to leave you in the first place?"
I slowly gather information from what he said. From what I got, Erica is a cheating ass and when Kale found out, he got on the plane to leave. I now feel guilty for jumping to conclusions so soon.
"I still love you, Kale. Don't you still love me?" Oh she did not just pull that card.
"It's hard to believe I ever did," Kale retorts. I know it's mean, but it's not like from what I gathered she doesn't deserve it.
"So without me, are you just going to go back to that girl you were with, Ruby?" Erica exclaims, crossing her arms over her chest.
Girl he was with? This is better than cable. Soap operas should really use this.
"Okay first, Ruby is a friend from school whom I talked to. Second, even if something happened, which didn't, we were broken up." Kale states.
"You know what, I came here to be with you, and this is what I get?" Erica complains, throwing her arms in the air.
"There is a phone by my bedside, I would've called if I wanted you," Kale calmly retorts.
Erica just stands there, bewildered. Does she really think she was going to win this? I mean, from what I got, she is delusional.
"Fine." And with that last word, she storms out, slamming the door so hard the TV hanging on the wall shook a little.
"Candace just ask your questions" Kale suddenly says.
"So she cheated, with your best friend, you tried to leave, had a girl that was a friend, she thought you cheated when you were over, and tried to make herself the victim?" I questioned.
Kale just sadly nodded his head.
We remains silent for a few minutes, lost in thought, until I broke the silence. "Do you still love her?"
Kale sighs, as if he thought about this too. "Like I said before; I'm not sure I ever did."
"What do you mean by that?"
"I mean I think it was all lust, how in the moment I felt. I honestly can say I saw this coming."
"I'm sorry," I mumble.
"It's not your fault what happened." Kale speaks sadly to me.
"No, I mean for jumping to conclusions." I clarify.
"It's fine. I probably would have guessed the same if roles were reversed."
It was quiet again. It was comfortable.
"Candace?" Kale asks, breaking the silence, again.
"Hmm?"
"After all this, why don't we share a place. I don't wanna sound pushy or anything, but we can't stay here forever. From what I observed, you don't have many options and neither do I."
I think of it in my mind. Do I really want to force myself onto my mom? No. This will give me that person I can talk to. I know it seems weird, but I trust Kale. I barely know him, but we could start new lives, together.
"I'd like that," I reply, and nothing can take the smile off my face.
