Right! I remember thinking, “I’m glad that girl’s not dead…before I ever got the
chance to know her.” Stupid, right?
(CHRISTINE stares at him.)
CHRISTINE
That’s… not stupid at all.
JAKE
Cool. Hey, a bunch of us are going out after practice today. You should join.
“Parting is such sweet”…
CHRISTINE
Sorrow?
JAKE
Whatever. (he spots JEREMY) Hey, dude. Someone wrote BOYF on your
backpack.
(JAKE exits. JEREMY tries to resume his game.)
JEREMY
So, I heard this thing about how humans aren’t evolving anymore?
CHRISTINE
I’m sorry, Jeremy. Did you say something?
(Across the room, JAKE smiles at CHRISTINE. JEREMY notices.)
JEREMY
Forget it.
ONCE AGAIN THERE’S BEEN A TAKE DOWN
BUT I GUESS IT COULD HAVE GONE WORSE
AT LEAST I DIDN’T HAVE A BREAKDOWN
THEN HAVE TO GO TO THE NURSE
I DON’T WANNA BE SPECIAL
DON’T EVEN NEED TO SURVIVE
I JUST WANT TO KNOW THAT CHRISTINE
IS AWARE I’M ALIVE
